Well still no new news ~ btw still waiting on any news on the release date for The Reign of Terror... Jon was talking about seeing the guy on Saturday. The end of Saturday is just over a day and a half away (at time of my posting this) in N.Z. A turnaround time of three days between the chap posting his claim and directly meeting an expert is extremely fortunate. Patience people! No doubt Jon will update us pretty soon if he meets up with an individual with some old film prints. And we won’t have to wait long to find out if there is nothing of interest. We might have to wait a bit longer to find out if the guy has some redundant prints (of say, The Aztecs). However if he in fact does have material of direct interest to the users of this board then I think we will be in for a wait. Because the RT/Beeb aren’t going to want to announce anything until until the cat is firmly in the bag (i.e. HD copies are safely residing in the U.K.). Can you imagine what would happen if some titles of “recovered†episodes got leaked and then for whatever reason they couldn’t be produced? So if we are informed that he does have some old film prints, but we’re not told he has nothing Who related, from what I can see that’d be all the news we’d get for a while. As to talk of hoaxes and fake footage, he said when he posted a couple of days ago he doesn’t know what’s among the film prints he claims to have, and I see no reason for him to go to the trouble of mucking about with Youtube when he’s got someone coming to inspect his stuff in 3 days. He’s gone quiet since being contacted by Jon, and would presumably have been asked not to generate any more publicity in the meantime. As I said it is not like we are going to have to wait long to find out something one way or the other. I hardly think an attempt at fake footage is going to fool anyone. And I don’t think rumours of hoaxes are helpful either at the moment either.

From my phone conversations with him, I am doubtful that he has any DWs. He's already gone through and examined most of the cans and reels - many of which aren't labelled - but from what I gather they are all colour films, no b/w. But I'm going to look at what he's got also for my own interests and curiosity.

Well, keep in mind he never claimed to have any Dr Who. He had memories as a child and he never lead us one way or another. I am glad Jon is going to be a friend to this guy and help him out so he knows what he has. I always found it exciting to rummage through collections. it sounds like its going to be a fun trip.. It would be ironic if his mom threw out the old bw and saved the colour.. Good luck Jon

Hopefully he'll have at least 1 DW reel tucked away somewhere...

What else of interest was sold to NZBC? Any chance of Target Luna or Out of the Unknown?

What else of interest was sold to NZBC? Any chance of Target Luna or Out of the Unknown? We never got Target Luna. OOTU did air. S1 was sent to Finland or Hungary; most of S2 went to Sierra Leone (in 1971), rest went to Finland or Sweden; Beachhead went to Yugoslavia, but rest of S3 have no note to say what happened to them. We never got S4.

I had heard a long while ago that a copy of Beachhead was made for an Italian Sci-Fi film convention ( cannot remember the year here for the life of me??? frustrating). Which I had heard was looked into quite vigorously, with no results. I still tend to believe after hearing this that a 16mm t-r recording of Beachhead still exists somewhere out there. As know there was no record of this being returned- or heard of after that actually. The same story goes for the prints of Marco Polo distributed to the CBC in the early 60's. Officially, I believe these just disappeared into the bicycling process.
I know, I know, a very long shot, but when that is all you are left with.....you work with what you have at hand!
Cheers, Lance.

It was a 35mm print of Beachhead (an episode of out of the unknown for those who don't know) that was sent to a french sci fi film festival competition. The existing episode 'The Machine Stops' won the competition in 1966, and it was hoped that Beachhead would win the competition in 1968 (before beach head had actually been broadcast).

I hold out hope that more out of the unknown's turn up, as it is the best sci fi/ horror anthology ever made in my opinion.

OOTU did air. most of S2 went to Sierra Leone (in 1971), rest went to Finland or Sweden A longshot but has Sweden been checked out for OOTU? They seem to have very complete TV archives right back to the '60s (and those 1948 Show compilations were unearthed there as well). It's always worth a look anyway.

Jon
Perhaps it might be worth checking if Bill's father kept up some sort of contact list of collectors/suppliers to see if there are anymore leads? even if he did, it probably no longer exists but might be worth asking...

This should probably be moved off the dr who thread and to the general missing tv area. But looking back at a previous thread, out of the unknown was sold to: Australia - which received every episode from the series except the asimov stories and an episode called 'To Many Cooks' due to copyright issues. New Zealand - received series 1 in 1967, series 2 in 1970 and series 3 in 1973, and probably didn't get the episodes that Australia didn't get. They didn't get season 4 at all. The 32 episodes that New Zealand screened were sent to Finland in October 1968 and February 1970, Hungary in February 1969, Sweden (March 1970), Sierra Leone (December 1971) and Yugoslavia in June 1973. This information is from a previous thread on ootu on the general missing tv page.
