I'm not so fussed with what was recovered, just that there was an episode on that tape. Plus it makes for an interesting story. Incidentally Richard, what's the definition of a 'contact' print? Paul mentioned that's what The Romans 3 was in last year's discovery.

Paul means that it's a reversal dupe - that is made by taking an existing positive print, and making another positive directly from it onto reversal stock (normal stock creates a negative image from a positive and vice versa, reversal stock creates a positive from a positive or negative from a negative) by running the two strips of film in "contact" through a film printer.

Nah, See the other thread - Jon Preddle was right, all I have is episode 5 of "Evil of the Daleks" with all of the bits with The Doctor, The Daleks, and any companions removed.

I'm reminded that the problem with commercial television is that the high quality entertainment is often spoilt by those annoying little interruptions - known as the programmes !

Just to take this slightly off topic... I'd be interested to know if anyone on this forum owns any Who cans? I'm sure a couple must!
Even if it's an episode that already exists that you purchased from a collector in the 80's, I'm sure there's an interesting story there somewhere! I gather they change hands for a pretty penny nowadays.
I have a vague recollection of a Who episode (Hartnell I think) going on ebay around 2001? Am I right in thinking this or am I making up?! Any remember how much it went for?

Richard: Do you mean film prints or film cans? Big difference - I sold a big bunch of empty Dr. Who cans to someone a while back - they weren't fit to keep films in, but make cool collectors items..
As for actual film prints, I only know of about ten collectors who have Dr. Who prints, and of those, most of them either came from duplicate prints I sold off when I bought Ian Levine's collection or are from those dupes made in the 80s. The others I know about are - David Gee in Australia has a few, there's that print of Daleks (3) that was sold on ebay (not sure who got that) , there's a collector with episode (6) of Reign of Terror, and another who has an episode of Unearthly Child and an episode of Tenth planet (both came from Ian L. however), Terry Burnett has two, Gordon Hendry has a couple, and someone got David Stead's original print of "Wheel(3)". There may be others, but that's what comes to mind...
Brad: I sold a spare Chase (6) print on ebay, and I think someone else had one as well - IIRC, that was one of the ones that was duped in the 80s.

There's a fair bit of material out there but I wonder if it's always obvious if these are original film recordings that survived the 1960s/1970s culls, or whether they are dupe copies made in the 1980s from material already residing in the archives. I seem to recall some naughty BBC people making (and selling) 8mm film copies of some of the existing Dr Who episodes such as The Web of Fear 1 and Wheel in Space.

There's about a dozen episodes that were duped in the 80s onto 16mm and some onto super 8... The titles I recall are Web (1), Evil (2), Wheel (3), Chase (6), Invasion (6), and possibly one from Dalek Invasion and one from Web Planet... I would guess that there are fewer than 25 actual 1960s/70s era prints in private collections. (at least that are known about)
