3 copies of The Web Planet 2 have turned up since 1978; the original Film Library audit (1978), in Ian Levine's Villier's House discovery (1978) and from Nigeria (1985). Sure, but only two of those were 'returned'. Oh pfft, semantics!!

I wonder what the most returned episode of Doctor Who is? Episodes were being returned to the BBC all the time; it's just that prior to the establishment of the official Archive in 1978, none of those were kept, nor was a record of their return made. (Or, if one ever existed in the first place, such a register has not been found; if so, such discussions as these would be redundant! Pre-1978, the most returned would probably be from the first three serials, as copies of those were flying around all over the place for 'audition' purposes. Yeah, I have the list here, let's see 6 copies of Marco Polo - binned 5 copies of Reign of Terror - destroyed 3 copies of Crusaders - sent to landfill 4 copies Galaxy 4 - eradicated 5 copies of the Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve - trashed 3 copies of Myth Makers - de-spooled into skip as I write 2 copies of Celest............ I can't go on.

They weren't returned because the BBC already held copies, but Mexican TV still had Spanish dubbed prints of the 56 Hartnell episodes they purchased when they were contacted in the 1980s.
The British base on the Ascension Islands had b&w film prints of The Sea Devils that also were not considered worth retrieving.
Aren't there also some Arabic prints of Hartnell episodes around?

Some of the Arabic & Spanish dubs have been used for alternative soundtracks on some DVD's.

If you are talking about random prints turning up that were not missing, there's also the following that I'm aware of:
Spearhead from Space (2) (colour film) Terror of the Autons (2) (T/R) Marinus (1) Dalek Invasion (4 or 5, I forget which) Enemy of the World (3) (possibly struck from BBC neg, not sure) Carnival of Monsters (1,2,3) The Daleks (ep 1, and also another episode (not sure which) which is missing the first few minutes).
There might be a few more that I'm forgetting, but those are the ones that come immediately to mind.

The Daleks (ep 1, and also another episode (not sure which) which is missing the first few minutes). That was Episode 3, sold on eBay in 2002, missing the opening four minutes.

I'd have thought it worth checking out black and white film prints. There was a screening of Colony In Space in Australia (I think), which was from film prints, and it sounds as though the film print of one of the episodes may have been made from an early pre-sypher edit - no music or sound effects in the clip I heard. I'd hate for them to have passed up the opportunity for a music-free version of The Sea Devils..!

aforth and StevenS, what are the dates when those showed up? Or are they all mentioned in Wiped?

Brad:
Spearhead ,Autons and Daleks (1) were sold on ebay
Carnival came from the same batch (IIRC) with Invasion of the Dinosaurs (& others) that Ian Levine acquired. Most likely from Australia.
The others came from a seller in the UK about 10 years ago (and I believe were originally David Stead's prints).

On the subject of redundant episodes returned, isn't there something in WIPED! that someone inside the BBC saw them destroying DW episodes returned from overseas AFTER the do-not-destroy order came down?

Twice I keep trying to remember to put that in, twice I keep forgetting! Thanks, will add it in the coming days.

I'm not sure that counts though, given that no video signal was recoverable.
