I reckon a double-pack animated release of both 'The Underwater Menace' and 'The Moonbase' could be a good idea. For one it would contain the newly disovered episode for the former, secondly the stories are concurrent and thirdly the latter is story is a Cyberman story which seems like another good selling point. Of course such an idea would depend on the success of 'The Reign of Terror' dvd release but I'm hopeful we will see more animated efforts after this in the not-too-distant future Trouble is a) you're talking about animating four episodes, and b) box sets have a lower budget per story than individual stories (I believe). Then release them individually then - problem sorted!

I'm still trying to work out the Davros Day Sale at Big Finish: 8 audio dramas @ a fiver each or 40 the lot! Maybe I should wait for the boxed set.

I think I'm right in saying that it is expected that every existing Doctor Who episode will be released by 2013. If so there will be no more normal releases after then. Could they animate a few episodes a year with the same budget they had before and release one or two DVDs a year rather than lots of DVDs. Would this go over the budget? (I hope this makes sense!)

I'm guessing there's no chance on earth that partial or fully animated Whos could get a TV showing to recoup costs?

No I'm afraid that wouldn't work. 2|E don't have a set budget per year to devote to releasing Who - every DVD has to be budgeted individually with a view to making a profit. AIUI the plan is indeed to finish the main release schedule next year, so what happens after that is anybody's guess. One advantage to this is that they *might* be able to assume the classic-Who-buying audience will have a little more spare cash to buy, say, two "special edition" animations each year, but at best that would probably only balance out the inevitable decline in interest once the regular releases come to an end (coupled with the probable decline of DVD as a medium...)

You are forgetting that it is quite likely, and I would like to point out that I am not speaking for the BBC or quoting any BBC statements or sources, that the existing doctor who adventures will probably be digitally upscaled at some point for blu ray release with a few new extras, so the fans can buy them all again! I dont think theres any worry of 2E running out of ways to exploit it's existing doctor who assets any time in the near future. Also as stated, I haven't heard of 2E having a specific yearly doctor who budget that will roll on year after year when they are all released on DVD.

I'm very sceptical about the idea that they'd bother upscaling them. Season box sets (either digipacked DVDs or an entire season transferred onto a couple of BluRays) seem like the most likely way for them to re-release the catalogue...

I dont know..... we've already had some DVD releases twice! I am not knocking it. It is business after all and people aren't obliged to buy them. I expect we will see them released again with newer bells and whistles before too long.

I expect we will see them released again with newer bells and whistles before too long. Oh I don't doubt that they'll do re-releases (though I can fondly hope they won't add any unmissable extra material aside from animations, which would be worth it). I just doubt they'd bother upscaling to HD when there's a fundamental limit to the level of detail in 625-line video, and most Blu-ray players have built-in upscaling that does the job as well as, if not better than, a 'burnt-in' upscale...

i haven't bought any classic who yet. i'm holding out for season long box sets on dvd (not fussed about bluray as i suspect the extra enhancement will do more harm than good). also not really bothered about how missing episodes are reconstructed - animation or telesnap as long as all the original material is released. whenever (if) they get round to these season presentations i hope the 'lost in time' eps are also repatriated to their rightful places in the running order. roll on 2013 if that's when its happening - i'll enjoy the olympics while i wait and upgrade my copy of metropolis... again

I am still needing to get a copy of The Complete Metropolis as well Rob. I hear you there in needing yet another upgrade to better represent in the collection. I am just glad the material was released in such a fast manner.
I still am holding out for a "Lost In Time Vol. 1.5" Bonus Disk Release. Much as in the same way A&E released the series 1 of the Avengers UCLA material. As they had just finished releasing the Emma Peel Megaset release. This was released shortly after as a bonus disk release to compliment the Mega Set. Keep hoping the BBC may follow suit and follow the Romans, for When In Rome....
I hate to think that season DVD releases will be a long time in coming. I really hope I am wrong here. However, see the BBC making so much more from the individual releases. They might release the last few DVD releases in a box-set ( rather like the last VHS releases on The End Of The Universe set )? Who can really state with any amount of certainty there??? The wait continues. There is my take on this matter, of course just one opinion.
Cheers, Lance.

Might well be quite wrong, but the temptation would be-if it isn't already happening-to box together unsold solo stories under a theme.'Cyclopean monsters',perhaps. Anyone else remember those re-released Target books bound in silver and two-novels-in-ones? Though the cost of a big cardboard box would be minimal-or better yet several with THE_COM_PLET-DOCT-OR-WHO-BOXE-DSET and a composite spine picture on the otherwise same old discs would adorn any shelf.
(Yes,we bought the two-for-one collect-them-all Bond videos about two years before we got into DVD.Thanks,Woolworths).

Yes! I have one of those. You are the only one I have heard who even remembers those have heard from on the board. Am very glad to see I am not alone here in that respect!!!
Think mine was through Star Books as I recall. Will have to have a closer look at my copy and get back to you there. Had " The Gunfighters and The Myth Makers " enclosed on my copy.
Re jgreen: Indeed. Am sure if this sort of release was created, that they would ensure that it would match the motif-trend-look of past releases. Yeah, let's just change it up to really get on everyone's bad side, that makes a load of sense??? As they have honestly been quite good at this for the most part. However, I just wish they could have left the BBC logo the same, as does cause some discontinuity appearance on the shelf. Oh well, what can ya do there right? And the addition of 2-Entertain on the spine, does cause a small ripple in the appearance of the collection.
I hear you there jgreen! Possibly a title such as "Doctor Who: Missing Monsters", " Lost In Time Vol. 1-5 ", " Doctor Who: Reinstatement ", " Doctor Who: Retrospective "?? Is anyone's guess there really. All too much guesswork at present. Am sure we will know when there is something in the books. As they say " Patience Is A Virtue " ( not our favorite at times, granted ), But still very important in matters such as these! Be Patient Everyone!
"All Good Things Come To ( He-She ) Who Waits "
Cheers, Lance.

I seem to remember a mini spate of limited-edition toffee tins and free badges as the videos came to an end.
