It sounds too good to be true.

I'm not an expert on videotapes - but if these are N1500 or N1700 tapes, then it would be a bit difficult for Macra Terror to be on one -- Macra is from 1967 - the N1500 was IIRC from 1970 and the N1700 was from 1977.. And I think the "long play" format was introduced with the N1700 which would make these most likely N1700 tapes....
Most likely a hoax designed to run the price up on the tapes - but I suppose it's a remote possibility that they came from Australia or were copied from another format... Seems very unlikely however...
*added note: it's possible that this seller is completely honest about it as he is selling a ton of old cine and AV equipment. But all that means is perhaps someone else wrote bogus titles on the tapes....

The seller was a bit vague when answering a question about the tapes,it could be that he is a bit wary of saying what the contents of the tapes are due to copyright issues,so has to sell them as "blank" to avoid the wrath of the BBC etc. I am sure he is genuine.

If anyone is interested, not that it means much, but i am going to bid on these and if there is anything on them the RT mob will be the first to know. Im not going to go crazy price wise as have been caught out like that before (not that i minded, but its the principle)

Just to throw my two cents in...in a pro and con sense,
in the 1970s i saw 2 Macra Terror episodes projected from 16mm at a cancelled school sports day in Masterton New Zealand. its been posted here before, it was around 74
whats interesting is that around 1977 my high schools had two types of Video recorder a reel to reel and one that used Tapes simillar to those in the photo...(if not the same ones) they were probably standard issue to schools and may have been in use in 74
its theoreticlly possible that somebody could have done a telecine transfer of the Macra episodes and sent them back to the uk (unlikely perhaps but still a possibility) or alternatively a UK owner of 16mm film prints could have done a telecine transfer to save wear and tear on his own 16mm prints long after Macras 1967 transmission...in the late 70s or 80s
the contents look to be taped of TV....but can we rule out that they are not from a TV studio?...or somebody that worked on all of the shows taped? (any common links between actors? producers? directors?) can anyone work out the time frame for the contents original screenings (ie did Boy From Space ever screen before Macra?)
cons are the label saying Macra Terror and not DR WHO which is inconsistent and the fact its probably all a big hoax (lol) but.......
if i was the BBC ild be contacting the seller......just in case.

As the seller says he has other stuff to sell, including film and 1960s-era video, perhaps the guys in the Restoration Team are the best people to chase this up?

I,ve just stied to contact Steve Roberts.. I agree we had these tapes at our primary school (as well as 16mm and UMATIC which was prefered) and most of those tapes were dated 75+ so you never kniow.. But the blue pen looks "newer" than the other writings on the tapes. and the age old question .. when the sellers seems a bit vauge.. forget it.. seriously.. I've been involved personaly with 1000's of "fake" ebay and other "private sales" from the late 80's (so have many here) and the golden rule is if the sellers isnt 100 percent able to talk at length about the items he is selling its all c**p. If YOU were selling somthing you wouldent hold back anything would you.. my 2nd tack is to ask him about (without letting him have any idea im intrested in his tapes) his other gear. and gauge his resopnse.. i bet he'll talk the talk then..

steve thinks it's a big joke!! but then how many missing epp's have ever ever turned up on anything other than non wipable fim..eh? er...... at least one ! Mr Roberts and co found Space Pirates 2 didn't they on a home made video recorder along with BBC moon landing footage...... technically it already existed at the time but it could have easily been another episode... i tend to agree its probably a joke /hoax but............

yeah yeah.. space pirates 2.. i though that was a gimme though..
and the tape could produce nice cleanish audio but the vision was sort of gone..
Ive seen this 100's of times..
Wierdly enough.. in about 1985-6 i REALLY wanted a Video recorder but my parents never bought one (far too expencive) so i spent a bit of time trying to record the "video signal" to open reel tape.. it worked.. kind of.. a snowy picture that came and went that was hardly recognisable. this tape played for about 4 years.. i would "amaze" ppl with the simple trick.. but about 25 years later nothing is now visible on the tape.. even played back on a Rejiged (i replaced all the Electrolitic caps and semiconductors resistors etc heads..) even had a 1khz tone i put on the start of the tape for head alignjment palyed it back on the "New" rebuilt Revox.. nothing, not a sausage.. the ihz tone sounds "clean" enough!! so yeah these tapes DO degrade,,

I do seem to recall the guys in question stating that they could have done 'something' with the video recording of space pirates 2, i.e. that it was still somewhat watchable. Macra? Prolly another hoax! Do prove me wrong someone

in that post steve made somewhere " which we all have read".. its was kind of playable to a point.. but as the TR was miles ahead quality wise. they diddn't think it was worthwile (was this epp one of the 35mm prints?).. still there may have been contiunity before /after show that (if taped ) would be very interesting.. but from recent post's that I've read Steve / Restoration Team. dont think much of "telivision Pres" at all.. they were offered a 8mm 26 min film of loads of 70's "Pres" and coudent be bothered.. this was last week !!

Well the guy has now ended the listing due to many enquires, and promises to look at the tapes and relist with screenshots, hopefully it'll put us out of our misery, one way or another.
For my pennies worth, I think he might be genuine, probably just aquired the tapes somewhere along the lines over the years, and did'nt realise the interest that could result from the title.

ahahhaha that's what they all say bud!... been there seen that. ahahhahahhahahah
yep that's the way.. blind belif that they are real... so how long have you been searching for missing progs? ..
look.. after about 300+ ebay "missing episode" "busts" i've been involved with.
anyone who says.. "due to imminence interest ill cancel my sale for now, until i look the tapes over" type thing.. what after hundreds of people asked you and the "sale" was still on.. you couldn't spare 5 mins to check?.. eh you had 7 days and 12 hours.. This is the hoaxers most common statement.. then we wait. and speculate on here while the whole time he is a member here ( oh yes belive me..) and "gets off" on all our frenzied speculations.
sorry for the graphic representation.. but after what 12 years of internet sales and seeing this type of thing 100-300 times.. and then speaking to the guy who usually started the things (about 6 months later... in person.. (after 6 months in tracking him down) he admits this was all a leg pull for his mates down the pub.. "hahah bloody wanky lame arse pale dr who train spottery who fans".. this will get em going.. lets see how far we will go..
This has happened and happens all the time.. THIS IS ONE OF THEM..
what huge interest with ebayers.. isn't that what was MEANT to happen when you sell something? isn't that what you are aiming for? ha ha bloody haaa eh eh ehh.. nahhh its a load of steaming poo...
we will n e v e r hear from him again.. expect the ebay account to close in the next 3 weeks and all the other items he has "close" soon as well.
Whoever set this up no nothing about so called A/V ept.. an idiot could have put together a better "List"
look who started this... who has the LEAST amount of posts here etc .. etc.. do i have to spell it out...
