Something I have always wondered.
What is known to/rumoured to exist in private hands?

Doesn`t the TOTP 500th edition (4/10/73) supposed to exist in a private collection. It is rumoured a well known Radio 1 DJ and TOTP presenter at the time has his own copy of it.

How do the majority of lost episodes that are recovered survive? Is it through off-air recordings? I don't know much about Top of the Pops in the archive, but I can't imagine it was sold overseas, for example.

some guy in America who won't let anyone else see it (though I did hear that it was submiited to Apple for the Anthology series, but rejected on grounds of quality) I'd be more likely to get excited about the 1966 TOTP if I thought we had a lobster's chance in a seafood restaurant of actually seeing the thing: TOTP appearance which is also rumoured to exist in the US. The Kinks performance from the 1966 Beatles edition is apparently in circulation: apparently it was shown publicly at least once in 1993, and I think Keith Badman has a copy on VCR at least : I wonder what the origin of this clip is, and it;'s relatio to the apparently complete sole surviving copy of the June 1966 edition which exists somewhere across the pond..
