Lawrence and William I stand corrected and apologise.
a rant.. its incredible that these historically important shows have been allowed to go astray , before home VCR when you were watching this, you just assumed that somebody was looking after it for posterity..well maybe someone was ? ...but not the BBC.

Sorry to veer off here, but it might be worth mentioning - Ringos collection. 'Paperback writer' on TOTP was supposed to exist, but his collection got destroyed in a fire. Anyone recall this? But P. McCartney was also rumoured to have kept a collection?
In answer to an earlier point; it seems the 60s TOTP performances (Kinks, Walker Bros 66 etc) are telecine point dupes of just the performances; (not complete TOTPs). I think Keith Badman traced the clips abroad where they turned up.

McCartney was also rumoured to have kept a collection? Yes, unfortunately Ringo lost all his copies of The Beatles' tv shows in the fire at his Monte Carlo home in the late 70's. All four Beatles were given video recorders around '66/'67, but I've never heard of any of them having any material. Apparently Lennon used to tape interference and watch it back for hours on end (still better than 'Celebrity Love Island'......). If Mcartney or Harrison had kept any recordings they may have made, then they would surely have been used in 'Anthology', so I think we can safely say that they have no Beatles-related material.

well you'd think so, but most of these celebrities including ex-beatles are an odd(in a completely non libelous way)bunch. they may have stuff, but we will never know.
