Kiki Dee is comparatively under-rated, being known mostly to the audience for her Elton John duet.
A lot of her solo singles were also good, several of which had studio TOTP appearances.

Looks (from the period and quality) like it's from the PVL material (and therefore known about). I don't have a full listing of that collection to know for certain though.

It's from the two full late '71 editions recovered by the BFI a few years back - b&w telerecordings, but complete.

There was an interview with Tony Blackburn in yesterday's Daily Mail
but only a miniscule mention of TOTP
Tony said he used to find doing TOTP with Saville a chore
'He'd always try to one-up you. if I was doing a link he'd always try to put me off. He was just...just Saville. Not pleasant.'
He goes onto say that he was'nt scared of Saville, but others certainly were.
and that in 1967 Tony's agent got a call from the person who ran the NME Maurice Kinn to say "There's a problem-you've won it, but Jimmy Saville always wins it and he wants to compere the Annual NME Poll Winners Concert show. Could we make Saville a joint winner with Tony Blackburn? We know you've won it,but go along with it because Saville is Saville."
Was that Saville's influence? 'Must have been.So we did the show between us,we jointly won the most popular DJ of the year.'
also in this article is a wee bit about Tony and John Peel.

Readers letter from the NME dated 10/4/71 I feel I must write and congratulate Top of the Pops on their album spot. With the exception of Marvin, Welch and Farrar and Nana Mouskouri, it has given me time to make a cup of coffee, fetch in the coal, flick through the Radio Times and be back in time to see the number 1 spot and the following programme.
Nigel Wyllie,Dumfries Scotlandfetch in the coal? "aye times were tough in those days laddie!" But not as tough as when I was young I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.

Nice one Shelley! I'm not a fan of YES but I thought if any forum member was; this might be interesting?... sorry if it's already common knowledge? Extract from the MM dated 13/03/71There's a row between Atlantic Records and the BBC over the BBC's refusal to give YES a place in the Album spot on TOTP.Atlantic had been trying to get YES that spot for 5 weeks. "We told them it had got to number 19 in your chart and they replied "Let's see where it is next week" the following week it was up to number 7. "They told us that the album spot was tied in with singles which is ridiculous, then they said if it was a Heavy Rock show, the album spot would be softer" TOTP told MM there's no ban on YES the album spot on the programme is not governed by the charts. It's entirely up to the producer. We have to consider what is suitable both visually and musically. We had 119 people phoning about the YES album. I think we've had it for 3 weeks it could still be used. Extract from the MM dated 03/04/71BBC SAY YES TO YESJon Anderson says "we wanted to do it" it gives more scope to bands that don't rely on singles. Soft Machine can't get on,but command audiences and sell records. We're not saying we're better than chart groups, but it would be nice to expose our music to the wider audience of TOTP. We're doing a short version of "Your's is no Disgrace" I'd like to see TOTP devote 1 week to singles and 1 week to albums."

If they had been on, Nigel Wyllie might have fetched in the coal.... Great info as ever, William

A favourite of mine was a Lynsey DePaul appearance on one of the "special" editions of TOTP. She was doing "Won't Somebody Dance With Me" when Tony Blackburn mimed to the "May I have the pleasure of this dance" line and they waltzed around as TB's hands encroached on Miss DePaul's (rather lovely) bottom and was promptly guided northwards by the said lady. It must have been 1973 and I think the show ended with David Cassidy flying in to perform both sides of his latest single. Happy memories!!

The appearance survives (privately) as part of the PVL collection, as does the entire David Cassidy performance (both in monochrome). Blackburn didn't actually mime the line though, he said it live - a true professional, as the audio reveals the song was (to comply with MU agreements of the time) partially re-recorded, with an open (i.e 'live') mic on top of the existing lead vocal. So there are two Lynsey De Paul vocals on this!!!!

I'm sure I have a memory from the time of Ed Stewart saying the line. Was that from another edition or am I having a senior moment? I need to be told!
EDIT: I just checked the Popscene site and Ed Stewart didn't present any episodes in 1973, so it must have been TB and I obviously was having a senior moment. Happens increasingly these days.

Well I suppose it's possible I was distracted by Lynsey's undoubtedly nice bottom, but I was only 10 and probably more interested in football at that age!
