"Maybe your attention was focused elsewhere?" Well I suppose it's possible I was distracted by Lynsey's undoubtedly nice bottom, but I was only 10 and probably more interested in football at that age! Using your numbers and my slide rule, Liam, I reckon you were born in 1963 (or thereabouts). That means that, as far as I'm concerned, you're a mere youth, a callow stripling, scarcely out of your pram, barely entitled to vote!! Senior moments, indeed!

LOL. I work with a few younger people so blaming it on a "senior moment" is a convenient excuse when I mess something up! Given the demographic on Missing Episodes I'll have to remember it won't wash here though.

A bit OT but can someone fill me in on a bit more detail re 'the PVL'? I've seen a few references and understand it refers to the Private Video Library. But apart from that, nada. Who owns it? I have visions of a demented individual living on a private island, stroking a cat.....

The most notable tapes are of some missing TOTP. A number of these have been sold privately over the years (including to Queen and Paul McCartney) and also to some fan groups and collectors. The whole collection was transferred and digitalized a few years ago by the vendor.

I've been in touch with John Richardson again after the recent sad passing of Lynsey De Paul. He was a close associate of her in the 70's and performed on her successful singles. He said that Lynsey had the entire band dressed up in Top Hats and suits for one TOTP appearance (unfortunately he can't remember which).

It would have been one of these:- TOTP STUDIO APPEARANCES 17/08/72 : Sugar Me 24/08/72 : Sugar Me 07/09/72 : Sugar Me 23/11/72 : Getting A Drag 07/12/72 : Getting A Drag 21/12/72 : Getting A Drag 25/12/72 : Sugar Me 04/05/73 : All Night Lynsey appeared on TOTP after that another 9 times but John wouldn't have been drumming on those.

Just to throw another one in to the pool, I happened to catch a bit of the Imagine documentary on Jimi Hendrix on BBC-4 just now. This used lengthy clips from his Purple Haze TOTP appearance in much better quality than has been floating around before (which was clearly no better than VHS quality and even then not a first generation copy). It looked like it came direct from the film clip (albeit well worn). I hadn't heard anything about this being recovered before and wondered if it was a fairly recent development.

The Hendrix clip has been discussed somewhere on this board. The complete performance is on the DVD version of the documentary as a bonus clip. Not sure if it comes from the Hendrix Estate.

Yes I was under the impression that the Hendrix estate has this and it hasn't been returned to the BBC. Sure I also read they have good quality footage of the Wind Cries Mary TOTP,though this doesn't seem to have surfaced.

Thanks, all! Yes, I must have totally missed that one! I knew about the mute clip of Mary residing with the Hendrix estate as I mentioned it on here years ago. I hadn't seen anything about Purple Haze though. Good to see there's a better quality version out there anyway.

The Hendrix documentary was excellent. I did notice though (& I have seen this on other recent docs) that obviously the interviews with e.g. Chas Chandler and Al Hendrix (Jimi's father) were old footage.
I wish they would display a date when these interviews were filmed. E.g. I assume Chas was mid 90s, just prior to his death. It could look like a current interview to the uninitiated.

This is from the Mailbag column of Melody Maker dated 21/08/71
Why do the BBC insist that groups appearing on "Top of the Pops" should dub their performance? This practice is so obvious and is fast becoming a mockery (e.g. Dave Swarbrick's "quick" instrument changes on the "Angel Delight" LP spot and Marc Bolan stuffing his guitar cord up his trousers!)
Surely a more realistic approach could be found for both audience and performer. And to quote Tony McPhee: "It would have been easier to do it live anyway."

It was probably easier for the bands to just hang around the BBC bar all day getting plastered and then mime to their latest hit, not having to worry about playing in tune or in time or getting a decent sound lol

I think this is the one with Ian Underwood on sax which exists.
