Well, I checked the P as B paperwork for the 9/9/65 TOTP edition last night and it says that the Donovan clip was a specially shot BBC film.

Thanks for checking Laurence When the press heard the news that Donovan was releasing an anti-war song and featuring it on his new EP,they all thought it was a gamble. Donovans managers advised him not to do any TV for the promotion, suggesting instead that he do a short film, an early 'video' it was filmed on the beaches of Normandy and Johnny Stewart did the filming. There on the beaches were the rusting tanks and a few landing craft, relics of the Second World war. Shot in black and white,it shows Donovan walking along the beach and miming to the tinny sound coming from a Nagra tape recorder.

With Johnnie Stewart being involved, I suppose it is just possible that it is the TOTP film mentioned in the P as B. Does anyone know Mr.Leitch to ask him?

Hi William I know hat you are very busy researching for us on here ,but if you ever come across any reviews in the papers on the 1st july 1976 edition of top of the pops will you please let us know .The reason is there is just one edition of top of the pops from ruby flippers time on the show that we don't on one for the dads have any definite info on ,the show is wiped and apart from guess work on what could be the songs ruby flipper performed to on that show it remains a missing listing on their database ,I know its a long shot ,but so far you have managed to find out lots of info that we didn't know before ,so who knows if there was a review the day after this edition was aired then the mystery of ruby flippers performances from that show might be solved at long last ,many thanks once again. Hi Jerry, I've had a look at the whole of July 1976 in the Edinburgh Evening News and unfortunately there are no reviews for the 1st July 1976 but I did come across the review below which concerns Ruby Flipper on TOTP... Top of the Pops-Hitting the Bottom! Edinburgh Evening News 30th July 1976It isn't just the same without them. Top of the Pops is missing Pan's People. Desperately. So now in place of the girls we all used to love and respect,we have a girlie dance troupe called Ruby Flipper, still choreographed by Fick Colby, who put it all together for Pan's People.
But you only had to see Ruby Flipper last night moving to a dirge of a commercial soul tune called "A Fifth of Beethoven"to see that the old magic simply isn't there.
And there are Thursday's when TOTP needs a touch of magic to give it a lift. It was developing that way last night despite the efforts of Dr.Hook and Jimmy James.
Boredom was setting in for me with a repetitive Status Quo rocker and the Beethoven bilge on the way to the real magic in the closing stages that totally, beguiling film of Elton John and Kiki Dee followed by,in sound over the credits, the Bee Gees single that should reach number one within two or three weeks.
cheers William

Wow! The first time I've ever heard the Elton / Kiki record described as "beguiling"!

How the TV critic can prefer "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" as opposed to "Mystery Song" beats me there's no accounting for taste. DGBMH used to drive me up the wall at the time and still does!

People's tastes are varied.
Some of my more 'rock' friends particularly ger irked that I can like, say Louis Armstrong or the Carpenters and dislike Foreigner or REO Speedwagon. Just an example....

I think it actually comes down to the individual song...arguably every group or solo artist in the world has came out with a song that they maybe should'nt have released...I have many Elton John songs in my collection and I really like his early period, but there's just something about DGBMH that bugs me. I too can appreciate Louis Armstrong and especially The Carpenters what a voice Karen Carpenter had, in my opinion one of the best female voices ever,I have many of their songs on my IPod and would'nt be ashamed to let people know. Take for instance "Goodbye to Love" it's a brilliant (cross-over song)brilliant singing and melody and one of the greatest rock guitar solo's of all time IMHO

Take for instance "Goodbye to Love" it's a brilliant (cross-over song)brilliant singing and melody and one of the greatest rock guitar solo's of all time IMHO It truly is and one which I would love to be able to play. It's that rarest type of guitar solo, one that illustrates the song, expresses it, developes it and adds to it hugely. The late Tony Peluso played it. Beautiful beautiful song, wonderful melody, evocative chord changes and the harmonies in the section immediately after the drum roll and before the solo kicks in are majestic ... Here's a live version, with added lyrics ... www.youtube.com/watch?v=nooeMrCws-A

Hi Shelley,
Thanks for posting the "Goodbye to Love" video, this just shows what I mean; what a singer Karen was,Tony Peluso's guitar solo, and last but by now means least Richard...truly a classic song.
