NME 29/09/73
Extract from an Interview with Mick Tucker of Sweet regarding a film they made for "Ballroom Blitz"
We made a film to show with the single, but it'll only be shown in America and the continent. We wanted to show it on Top of the Pops but the BBC prefer you to appear live, if you can, and we've got this guy Nicky Chinn who does'nt want to lie.
We said to him 'lie to the BBC and tell them we're out of the country or something' but he would'nt do it. A pity really, 'cos it's a good film. So I've heard."

My point about David Cassidy on TOTP has basically been proven!
The official word was that he was recorded at Heathrow because of safety concerns. My thought was 'that's b#######!' That did not ring true to me at all. If the Osmonds and T Rex (and Slade and Sweet) were allowed to play, despite them possibly having - in 1973 - more "mad" fans, then why not David? He may have had either a diary problem or even maybe work permit issues, but it wasn't a security thing, no sirree....
So it was pre-recorded the DAY before! I did think it was pre-recorded because although BBC TVC and Heathrow are not THAT far apart, it would have probably been a logistical nightmare to record it during the day's schedule (nigh impossible, in fact).
And of course, David had not passed customs control, so he was not subject to the miming ban....

Roger Daltrey quote from the NME dated 12th Feb 1972..."I mean Top of the Pops is like an extension of the Engelbert Humperdinck show: a 40yr-old man's view of a 12yr-old girl's knickers"
Tail Pieces compiled by Alley Cat/NME dated 5th Feb 1972...Badfinger drummer Mike Gibbons looked a real honey with his three foot-long female blonde wig on Top of the Pops recently.

The Alan Price and Georgie Fame comments below are about their single 'Rosetta' and also the screen credits on the 1st April 1971 Top of the Pops within an interview in the NME dated 10th April 1971...
Georgie: "At 'Top of the Pops' we tossed a coin and it was going to be Price and Fame on the screen credits, but at the last minute they decided upon Fame and Price."
Alan replied: "So if it's a flop, it's your fault. Anyway, the record's bright, breezy and boring."
Georgie replied: "All the ingredients for a big hit." Rosetta has got Hit-Hit-Hit emblazoned all over it."

Rory Gallagher December 1971
Question: Why have you never released a single?
Answer: It goes back to my original ideals. I don't knock people who make singles, but it just does'nt appeal to me. I don't want to appear cynical, but it just seems you appear on "Top of the Pops" and get a front cover of some music magazine in colour with green eyes and yellow teeth. There are some people who are suited to the Top Ten, and some who are'nt.

Sad news about Lynn Anderson (I created a R.I.P. thread for her on NEXUS)
But whilst I was looking for an interview with her in my music papers I came across a wee snippet about her regarding Top of the Pops.
It was in the Disc and Music Echo from the 6th March 1971 and it was regarding the 25/02/71 TOTP video (it said when she's not singing she goes horse riding (as you may have detected if you saw Top of the Pops last week)
so the video footage must have been equine related?
according to POPSCENE this edition of TOTP exists! has anybody seen the footage?
FEBRUARY 1971: 25-2-71: Presenter: Jimmy Savile
(22) ATOMIC ROOSTER – Tomorrow Night (NEW) RAY STEVENS – Can We Get To That (2) THE MIXTURES – The Pushbike Song ® (23) LYNN ANDERSON – Rose Garden (video) (and charts) (36) THE SHOWSTOPPERS – Ain’t Nothin’ But A Houseparty (4) PERRY COMO – It’s Impossible (video) (20) CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARD – Everything’s Tuesday (28) DANA – Who Put The Lights Out (ALBUM TRACK) THE FOUR SEASONS – Let’s Hang On (ALBUM TRACK) THE FOUR SEASONS – Medley (24) PAUL McCARTNEY – Another Day (crowd dancing) (1) GEORGE HARRISON – My Sweet Lord (crowd dancing) (and credits) >> this edition exists at the BBC as an unedited studio tape, complete with retakes and mute DJ links.

I do recall seeing a Lynn Anderson performance of Rise Garden on TOTP William. It was obviously from an American broadcast and was just a studio shot typical of C/W shows in the States at that time.

The Atomic Rooster performance on the Popscene listing appears to be incorrect, the first song is Ray Stevens. There's a live TOTP performance of Rose Garden that survives as part of one of the German pop shows too (Disco?)

The Atomic Rooster performance was preserved from the Bob Pratt tapes, and is ex-18.3.71 (the very end of the Barry Ryan performances is present). The version of 25-2-71 in the BBC archives is unedited, with mute links and aborted takes of performances. There is an aborted run of end credits too, and 'Atomic Rooster' appears on that which is part of the reason nobody can be certain 'Tomorrow Night' was part of the show that has it's fair share of broken links and gaps.
I understand an audio recording of the show was recently recovered, allowing for the sound of all but the first link to be restored to the show as it is without Atomic Rooster, and an 'as broadcast' copy of the show to be created.

I suppose the PasB might hold the definitive answer, if anyone can prise it out of Caversham.

This is from the readers letters page of the Disc and Music Echo in Jan 1972...
Out of the Pan...
I watched Top of the Pops on Jan 13th with a mixture of disgust and amazement! Why show Pan's People cavorting to the strains of "Stay With Me" when they had a perfectly good film of The Faces? No readers name or address was supplied.
