Sorry but why bother with all this when Philip Morris has already posted a claim about finding another copy of the episode?

Sorry but why bother with all this when Philip Morris has already posted a claim about finding another copy of the episode? I must have missed that announcement. Got a link? Good to know, if true, though. Why bother? It's a good rehearsal, find what works, and what doesn't. then if a similar film turns up, they know what to do.

My last post may have been too enigmatic.
This IS the Morris film.
Paul wrote in an earlier post that Phil had handed back 3 things to the BBC: "The sky at night", this episode of Morecambe & Wise, and a few episodes of some children's scifi show.
...AS FAR AS I KNOW.

The alleged 2nd copy relates to a supposed quote on facebook where Mr Morris said they had found a 2nd copy. One of the many rumours kicking around the internet

More likely that the words "2nd episode" have been misread. Paul didn't write in the OP of this thread that this is that episode, but he will no doubt soon confirm what I just said.

We should be grateful that no-one has started a rumour yet that the can said "Morecambe & Wise" but in reality contained Web of Fear 3. After all, the film is unplayable, so we can't check. Actually it might be true.

This is what Philip Morris said: DELETEDOK, let's nip this in the bud and get a few things straight. Philip Morris made a comment on a private Facebook feed which can only be seen by his friends and the friends of the thread he was replying in. We do not repost comments from private Facebook accounts so don't do it again. Apart from anything else, it's just plain rude. If there is a second print of the M&W film, I haven't seen it and neither has Phil, but obviously it would be great to track one down. In the meantime I'm prepared to exhaust all opportunities to recover anything that is possible to recover from the one print we actually have in our possession. So, putting that to one side, do not repost messages, or other comments from anyone's private conversations on Facebook or any other forum. If you can link to a comment because it is publicly available then fair enough, but anything else is out of bounds. I hope that's clear. Paul

I imagine the final solution involves an electron microscope or whatever it is they use to look under the layers of paintings.
Then of course you need some software to figure out which parts of the layers belong to the coil above or below, while taking into account the warped shape of the blob you're scanning to begin with.
This will probably cost millions so someone will need a grant from somewhere to do this recovery as a research project.

(not targeted at anyone specific) Maybe, or it could be a photoshop job or a misquote or something else. Tbh, I am not as bothered as the majority of the fans about stalking Phil Morris and company; let them get on with recovering stuff. If there is more to come back then I will see it eventually. It is a pity fandom doesn't obsess over raising funds for third world countries or something charitable like that - they could have saved thousand upon thousand of lives instead of getting irate and weird about possibly spurious internet rumours......................................

Dan probably just wanted to give us facts, instead of rumours. But on principle Paul has a point.
(Although... Playing the devil's advocate, one might ask if Philip could reasonably expect that post of his to remain private, given his high profile (and facebook isn't exactly a haven for privacy either).)

I didn't see it on Facebook, I saw screencaps of it posted on other forums Paul, so too late, it's out there. That doesn't make any difference. When people post they post under the given rules and terms and they expect the level of privacy afforded by those terms. It takes sensible people with respect for that privacy to honour those terms in respect of others rights. With regard to Facebook, there is a high level of trust in play; if one of my friends breached that trust, they would no longer be a Facebook friend of mine. Unfortunately, it only takes one simpleton to breach the trust of all the others (over 600 people) who also saw that post and one or two others who just follow like sheep and repost the private comments around other forums. His comments were directed at the people in that conversation and not to the wider world; he knew that and so did the person who ignored his privacy settings. It makes no difference at all whether "it's out there". Paul
