Do you think so? Without justifying it, I think it's absurdly unrealistic to expect someone like Phil Morris NOT to get quoted if he posts something to 600 (!) people on facebook. If I don't lock my brand new bike in the wrong part of town, it will be gone when I come back. That's still theft of course, but I might have known that was going to happen.

Ah, but the Facebook page in question WAS locked. Let's try this. If you locked your brand new bike with a combination lock, but told 600 of your friends the number, would you still expect it to be stolen?

Of course,if I gave each of them a back-up combination to the missing-episodes safe...

All right, so most metaphors don't bear close examination. Mine, and yours too. I won't comment any further because I've already stated my opinion and I don't want to give the impression that I'm in it just for contradicting people.
I don't have 600 friends anyway.

There's a probably-apocryphal story about a bloke buying a copy of 'Green Lantern' 1 (an expensive comic). The shop-keeper tears the cover as he takes it out of the bag for a once-over."Not to worry" he says, and reaches under the counter for another copy... IF it should transpire the PM has found two-count 'em,two-copies of a missing M&W it would be pretty impressive, suggesting that he can pull quite a few things out of his ten thousand gallon hat.If only.

Look. Let's all just agree to what's plain as the noses on our faces. Facebook is a tool of the devil. Now, I'm going to post all my credit card numbers of Twitter, right next to the lengthy description I've written about what I think about my boss.
So no one go blabbing it about!

It comes as a surprise, given his reputation for keeping his own counsel,to find that he's sharing information in this way. Obviously, this means that I'm not in with the in-crowd...
Reminds me of 'Get Smart' when they're searching for C.H,A.O.S.'s H.Q.,and a passerby says "Are you looking for C.H.A.O.S.'s H.Q.? It's that building over there, with the sign."

Getting away from he said/she said and onto the preservation of the film,
I spoke to the gentleman and he did say there a remedy for the problem with this film.
He said there is a substance called "film renew" what you do is you soak the flim in this for months and it does allow it to become unrolled. However, it needs to be scanned asap once it comes out, because letting it dry could hinder the appearance.
He said that it will definately be able to let you unwind the film, however the shape that is underneith, he can not confirm.
He also said right away it needs to be put into a ventalated can (tuscan he said is the manufacturer of one.) He also said it needs to kept away from other films as the vinegar syndrome is contageous.
He also gave me a link to a film that was viewed unrecoverable by a major archive which they were able to save.
Not only has he written articles on film restoration for technical journals, he is also has a passion for helping share film preservation also. He doesnt care if he does it or if the BBC or BFI wish to do it. He also participates in a program that maybe able to supply a grant type situation for culturally significant almost lost films if needed.
Again he will not do anything with the film until he gets permission if sent to him, and because of the condition, once he gets approvial to go ahead he might require a waiver, however he felt any risk with the courier service is much greater than any risk added by himself.
I asked him to write it up what we discussed so i state it accurately and once i get it, if paul gives me a private email, ill forward to him.
hope this helps.

I havent seen the PM comment yet, but im curious if there is a misunderstanding between the 2nd print and the 2nd episode.
If there is another print, then I believe that would determine at what level of investmetn should be made to it.
(sigh.. these cryptic messages do more harm than good. At the least have PV and others in the loop so they know how to go forward)

Hi George, Yes, I have some Film Renew which I imported at great expense just for this film. I'm afraid that the film is too far gone even for Film Renew. One of the reasons that I cut the reel off the print is because it was plastic and the Film Renew is extremely corrosive to plastic. I didn't want the plastic to contaminate the film whilst it was soaking. But once I had gotten the reel off the film, I realised that it was too far gone for Film Renew to work. The emulsion is so unstable that the mere act of adding or pouring the solution into the can would cause the emulsion to separate. It is a terrible state of affairs, but there you go. Film Renew is not the answer to this film. Regards, Paul
