Dee time

can anyone tell me if all the Dee time shows from 1967-1969 are still in the BBC archives? or have they been wiped?
Ive seen clips of Dee time from different times and wish the BBC would rerun them or even devote a channel to just archive material instead of Sunday pastimes or tops 2.

How great are the chances that some more 'Dee Time' material might ever turn up? Has there ever been a concerted look for this material in territories which have resulted in the unearthing of lost BBC gems previously - like Australia, New Zealand and Sweden?

Also, I've learned previously that Anglia, for instance, have traditionally had a fantastic archiving policy - just about the best of the ITV regions. I know for a fact that Anglia showed the LWT-produced 'Simon Dee Show' during 1970...so what chance they might have retained any of them? Particularly - for instance - the programme which featured World Champion racing driver Jochen Rindt being interviewd? Lotus are, of course, based in Norfolk and have long held a particularly strong relationship with Anglia TV...

Just wondering aloud...

geez!!! so all those shows are presumably lost forever except for the man himself simon dee.
i think the bbc should be called to account for allowing such a thing to happen.

its funny, look how old the crown jewels are and yet they keep them!! in fact they get more protection than the man woman child in the street!!
and despite the fact all those shows were paid for by our parents(im 38 ) the bbc just went ahead and wiped em all without a thought or care for how we the payers and viewers feel!!
i consider shows such as dee time as part of our heritage and they should have been kept for future generations to wacth.
but now all we have are 2 shows and a few clips!!
this is why people bid ridicoulous amounts of money on ebay for old n1700 videotapes etc in the hope of finding rare old programmes that have long been wiped.
my parents didnt buy a vcr till the late 1980s so therefore all the programmes i used to love wacthing and wish i could have taped are now lost in my memory which fades the older i get.
there must be tons of old videotapes from the 1970's with loads of old stuff on em that i would liove to buy and sit down and wacth again!!

is that so? some of the best shows were made in the 60's and now we have little or nothing to look back at.
i know for a fact that when simon dee left the bbc and went to lwt all those shows were recorded and are still in the archives

tv in my youth(70's and 80's) was much better than it is now and thats why people are always looking back.
look at the trash kids get these day? ministry of mayhem!! thats just another version of tiswas and i hated tiswas!! and still do because it is mindless trash!!! people throwing custard at each other for 2 hours!!! great!!
its cheap rubbish and doesnt take much effort .
programmes like art attack is good because it inspires kids to tap into themselves and learn to draw and be creative.
there should be more stuff like that.
if i had kids i would never encourage them to watch the tweenies or anything with stupid nonsense like that.

I find myself having to agree with Guest F. A properly constituted channel devoted to television's past would be a very much desired aim.

It is, of course, a matter of taste as to what would be of interest. It is probable that monochrome programmes would receive a better public following. But, it would depend on the type of programme.

It is certainly the case that showing the same programme twice on the same day (as happens with ITV3) does not help in the cause of archive television.
(You will note the BBC4 travesty of last April helped even less).

A true archive channel would have a slot each week for any new recovery of early television material.

Also, there could be the type of programme not usually shown in full (a Panorama programme from the 1950s, for example).

A point to consider is whether any of those reading this posting would be interested in a music programme from the fifties or early sixties featuring an orchestra playing classical or popular light music, or a "Brains Trust" discussion, or even what remains of the Simon Dee shows (BBC and ITV).

It is not, and cannot be, all about cult television, i.e. if it is to be a channel devoted to the archives. This being said, cult television and treasured programmes could be given pride of place on such a channel.

just want to say that you point came over well and i just hope that someone from the tv companies will look in and take note and at least try out a channel devoted to retro programmes.

to continue with itv3 as it is isnt the right way to go.
they need to give us more choice, consult us and then if it is possible, then go ahead and rerun some of the old classics.
i get the impression that the controllers think the viewing public are content with the current standard of tv..im not.
programmes are made for the purpose of entertainment first and formost and over the years there has been many a entertainment show made.
so what if its old fashioned? let the viewers be the judge.
for example i think there are far too many house makeover programmes, i would like to know why?
is there a majority out there that really enjoy makeover programmes?
what about those of us that would like to see shows from an era when it wasnt all about house make overs and cookery programmes?
when i think back to the days of my childhood, i used to enjoy wacthing the saint with roger moore in the morning.
and then it would be the galloping gourmet and then pipkins, then rainbow.
then the news at one, then within these walls or crown court.
now of course things have changed, rainbow has gone and the saint has gone but the point is people wacthed those programmes and throughly enjoyed them.
i cannot see the entertainment value or informative value of for example this morning.
to me that show is well past its sell by date and should be scrapped or moved from its slot to another channel specifically for those that find it entertaining and informative.
something must be done to change the way tv is and has been for the last few years.
there has been a huge amount of absolute trash that has been shown on our screens and its should not be a case of you know where the off button is!!!
the tv companies must get it right!!!
i remember about 10 years ago lwt was stuck in a rut and were showing alot of rubbish and this continued weekend in and weekend out.
now i no longer wacth itv1 at the weekends and even less so on weekdays because it is CRAP!
the same tired old programmes, and oh yeah its the bond season for the millionth time!!!
boy would heads roll if i had any say over the programmes that are shown these days!!!
dont get me wrong, i think james bond films are good but when it gets to the point when one can actually predict what will be shown at certain times i think its time for a change.
christmas tv is worser than ever on all channels!!
i remember i would eagerly await the christmas bumper issue of the tv and radio times when i was in my teens and there always seemed to be something of entertainment value on tv
now i would never buy tv or radio times anymore because i know it will be full of the same old trash just like it has been for quite a few years.
in fact i think they have got a right nerve to even continue to make and sell tv times and radio times.
they wont change and tv will continue to go downhill.
at least till someone goes in there and causes an almighty stink to force out the people that are causing tv to go down and replace them with a new fresh set of people that dont decide amongst themselves what is entertaining to the public, but actually get the public involved and let us have a say in what we want to wacth.
tv as it stands is stale and boring and needs one hell of a kick up the backside.
i am sick and tired of the same old shows.
no more holby city, casualty is more than enough.

its gone downhill ever since and i predict it will soon come to an end because it is boring and try as it may to be cool and hip, it looks tired and deperate and i think they should let it go.
its had a long run, and by right we should be able to look back and see just how far music tv has come but thanks to the bbc's policy of wiping past shows we can only look back so far which i think is a shame really.
i wonder if the usa tv companies did to the ed sullivan show what the bbc did to totp?

24/3/69 - interview with Jack Wild exists only.
3/5/69 - Marty Feldman, Ben Gazzara, Sandie Shaw - even this edition is missing the opening titles!
26/7/69 - interview with Wilfred Hyde-White exists only.

So if like me you've seen the opening titles and the Robert Morley clip you've seen plenty of whats left!

So if like me you've seen the opening titles of the 2/11/68 edition, the Lionel Jeffries interview that turned up on a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang programme and the excrutiating Robert Morley clip, you've seen plenty of what's left.

I'm sure the Feldman, Wild & Thorpe ints have probably appeared on programmes at some point, maybe even the Shaw performance?
