Fifty seconds of Family performing The Weavers Answer on TOTP in 1970. Is it correct that the full performance exists and is held by the BBC?

That's the exact same clip that was shown during an episode of BBC's Pop Quiz in the 1980s, so I've always assumed that the full version was still in the archives here. We need to ask Ray!

^ Absolutely, and if The Oracle's answer is in the affirmative the next question is "Why have the BBC never shown it in full?"

My good friend Pete Seaton has found a missing TOTP audio - Jimi Hendrix 'Hey Joe' 29/12/1966. I believe that was Mr Hendrix' first UK TV appearance, and so is VERY historic! I would like to congratulate Pete for this - remember this was AFTER the miming ban, so it should be a different version to the single. Ray, I had forgotten, what was the scope and years of the miming ban?

I am not sure when it ended - I think it was gradually in the early 80's when it was just ludicrous to keep it.
The miming ban basically started in June 1966 and all acts had to either perform live or re-record the backing track.
Early on, artists realized they could just partially re-record the backing track and get away with it. That's often forgotten!
I could write an essay on this, and when I have the time, I will.

I didn't realise for how long this was in place, a lot of 1970s TOTP performances sound very close to the original I would have assumed they were miming.

The Who's performance is from 'Pop Into 71' (pretty much part of the TOTP canon), and has nowt to do with Lulu other than she was on the show! I did tell the uploader the name of the show, but.... It actually originates from the studio master tape which the Who got a copy of - and then the BBC WIPED - The Who's copy was then copied during the ensuing years. Whether the Who still have a pristine copy on VT is unknown. The Who on 'A Whole Scene' still exists in the archives, in fact, the whole edition does.

The clips of the Rockin' Berries and the Uglys are from "Midlands News". Both clips are also on the MACE (Media Archive for Central England) website.
