Hi william ,thanks for the offer ,i dont know if you will find any details ,but if its possible could you have a look and see ,if there is any info on granada tv new pop show that started 1st november 1968 called discotheque ,only there is very little info anywhere about this pop show ,also do you know if the pop show lift off, which began november 69 is mentioned anywhere ,in the papers ,many thanks.
Discotheque UPDATE number 10
I photocopied this page today from the TV Times (Central Scotland)issue in 1969
It mentions an ITA mast in Yorkshire collapsed during transmission of "Discotheque" on Wednesday March 19th 1969 Unit Four plus Two were singing at the time,The Dalys and Amen Corner went blank. The rest of the article is just about technical issues. The picture below is from that episode of "Discotheque" I have'nt seen those guys before, so they must be The Dalys? To follow the "Discotheque" research postings from the beginning please see pages 1,3,6,8,9,10,12 and 15cheers William

Hi Ronnie,
That was me,the handsome one amongst the throng, concerning the (TV Times) they brought in about 10 volumes, for 1969 and 1970.
I was looking for any pop music TV show info, especially anything to do with Pop Scotch, but alas I could'nt find anything yet!
Apart from that I found some stuff about(Discotheque)
but I did'nt really have enough time to delve into the minutiae,as I was also looking through a volume re (Look-In)for Jerry and also the (Edinburgh Evening News and Despatch between April and June 1964)for John Green especially the article about Ready,Steady,Win, and some other good stuff there,I found articles on The Beatles coming to Edinburgh for their concert at the ABC and fans camping out overnight for tickets etc.
I always go to the Library on a Tuesday between 10am and about 1:30pm and I always try to get the same area next to the wee door whereby the staff bring in the trolleys with the books on them. So if you are ever at the library again and you see me,just say hello
cheers William

I was sitting just along from you And do you remember the friendly librarian in the pince-nez glasses? The one who couldn't do enough to help you in your researches? Well,I was the bloke next to him, looking through all the Playboys! (Sorry about that;we've just been re-watching the end of Blackadder 3.I really am envious of you doing all this work).

Aye, there's a scary looking female librarian there that's treats people like they are in Primary 3 or whatever. I have to bite my tongue when it;s her I need to ask a question of. That's because I don't want to be sarcastic and end up being barred from the library. The others in general are nice and helpful, she is in her way as well but her social skills leave a lot to be desired. I dread to think what she say if I asked for a copy of the Rupert the Bear cartoon from the Schoolkids issue of 'OZ'I regret selling that issue on Ebay years ago. The library does stock 'OZ' as I saw someone looking through them the other week. Maybe I should ask for a laugh?

I'm sorry to say that the little I've had to do with librarians over the last few years has left me unimpressed with their level of education/understanding.Only a generalisation, not all cases I'm sure, but it hasn't given me a lot of incentive to use the libraries.Though come to think of it,I'm not sure that these have many books left... Having had a row today with a bookseller on our local market,I'd echo my mother's words and say it's best to just ignore them.

`So if you are ever at the library again and you see me,just say hello' You get told off for speaking in there! Dont know if you have ever been to the Mitchell but the comparison is like night and day! Must admit the staff are pretty good though but a bit p'd off today as I asked for a load of newspapers and one volume was missing so I have to travel through tomorrow again!

Must admit the staff are pretty good though but a bit p'd off today as I asked for a load of newspapers and one volume was missing so I have to travel through tomorrow again! I personally like the rule with regard to no talking; as long as it's not authoritarian, as I have been able to whisper to other people around the (newspaper)table...so you would be able to come over to me and introduce yourself. Or we could speak outside the room itself. re your other comment about one volume of newspapers being missing,I've had that happen to me there as well. It is very annoying, to stop it happening again phone 0131-623-3822 before you set off from home and they can confirm if the newspapers are there. This morning I went to the desk and asked for the Daily Record I'd pre-ordered only to be told it was'nt there and that I'd have to wait at least an hour if not two before I could get it delivered, as it was mysteriously (in transit?), anyway, I did'nt make a fuss and just stood around the area sorting out some paperwork I had brought in, when I could hear two of the librarians discussing my order, then I heard one of them saying that the newspapers where there after-all. Finally, I've never been to the Mitchell library,is it good? do they have as good a collection of newspapers?

Wasnt actually criticising the rules William I agree with the no talking also. The Mitchell is worth a visit as their archives go further back than much of the NLS. For example the NLS only has Daily records back to 1953 and Radio Times' from about 1957 whereas the Mitchell has earlier editions. You can just turn up too no ID required - like I say like night and day. They have the Evening Times, Record and Herald all on microfilm which are in cabinets you can help yourself from. Unlike the (otherwise good) google online archive the Herald and Times holdings appear to have no gaps.Other titles have to be requested but are stored on site. Some items are on film others hard copy. Its quite easy to get lost there though it a big building! They nhave similar hours to the NLS, 8pm Monday to Thursday and 5pm close Friday and Saturday. Incietally if you are not aware the NLS hold a complete run of STVs The Viewer from 1957 up until Scottish editiion of TV Times began in 1965. For the last couple of years it was replaced by - off the top of my head - TV Guide which they also have. Dont worry I will be 'checking on the 3822 number in the morning!

Hi Ronnie,
The Mitchell sounds great!I must go there sometime, especially as they have the Daily Record going back further than 1953 that would be great for my football project.
No I.D. very good, I have'nt used any microfilm facility yet, that's something I must try out and storing on site sounds good as well, as you say it must be some size of a building.
I do know about The Viewer, I've got it on my list of things to look at eventually.
I wonder if they hold old editions of the Press and Journal and the Evening Express from the Aberdeen area?
The reason is ask is that I'd like to do some research on my other 2 threads "Pop Scotch" from 1969 and 1970.
Finally good luck today,I hope your newspapers are there o.k.
cheers William

..........But don't worry, the way this Government is going in pushing back the frontiers of mass literacy with its library closures and cuts in central funding you probably won't have to put up with these uneducated drones for much longer.

I'm friends with an ex-librarian.an erudite, helpful man.He knew more than me on many subjects before we started looking them up.The tendency locally is to expel books from libraries in favour of the internet-did I mention that Keele University library up the road disposed of Isaac Newton manuscripts to purchase some 'ring-fenced' modems?-meaning that when I do go to the reference department, the librarian starts the Google search I've just finished. After asking "How do you spell 'Gilbert and Sullivan'?" I'm sure it varies from town to town, and from institution to institution. You've both obviously got access to wonderful resources.

Hi William, I can confirm they have both the Aberdeen newspapers you mention going back to the 1950s at least. Coincidentally I had late 1970s copies of both out jsut a few weeks ago. The NLS is excellent for local Scottish newapapers - I had the Dumfries an Galloway Standard plus the Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser when I saw you yesterday. What am I researching? I'm in the library now and the PC won't let me post a link but if you enter my name into an Amazon search you will soon find out.
