Update: the dates could be incorrect. A single CD issue had the wrong dates listed on the insert. It was supposed to have S01E03 and S01E06 on it according to the dates. But actually the tracks came from S01E08 and S01E06. Snafu? You bet!!

Recent Airings on R4X

Recent airings by the Beeb of series 1 and series 2 were labelled 'shortened' (one was labelled 'other'). However they were all about 29 mins long and as far as we know are complete as per the originals - so what the labels referred to is a moot point. All have been capped at 320 kbps, and are in circulation.

Missing eps.

S01E01 has not been aired since about 2003 or earlier. There is but one low bit rate version (64 kbps) in circulation that was uploaded to Archive.org but which was subsequently deleted. Copies are in circulation.

S01E03 is not missing - it is on the 2 x CD set of Lines .... However it is also listed as being on other CDs - but in fact this is a mistake by the Beeb. The extant CD version is the full episode.

S02E04 was withdrawn again in about 2003; a version from a transcription disc is incomplete. Is is thought that the episode was removed from re-airing due to one longish sketch - 'Thirty Thrim' - which has references to an invasion of the Middle East in the 1930s. There is a copy of the transcription disc (no. 10) in circulation. There is a copy of the full episode from Archive.org in circulation.

Christmas Special (1971) - this has been aired quite a few times, but usually as a compilation of other Christmas-themed programmes. Due to copyright restrictions one sketch spoofing Dylan Thomas was removed in about 2003. However a copy of the original is circulating.

Series 3 - the unaired recordings now in the possession of Keith W. who created a 'series 3' remain thus - unaired. But at least they are safe. Despite Ronnie Barker's popularity the Beeb has shown no interest in airing them.

I have it on good authority that the reason episodes downloaded using get_iplayer are marked 'shortened' has nothing to do with edits for
political correctness.

The complete version on the original tape includes the full playout music at the end of each recording. Most episodes aired on BBC R4 Extra only include everything up to the closing announcement, but fade-out the approx 90 seconds of playout on the end (the "optional" bit), in preparing the transmission copy.

The BBC created a marker they thought would never be noticed, to have an easy way to tell whether they were transmitting a programme
that contains the playout music. These eps have literally been shortened, by fading out the end. The eps are faded, not edited.

Having now retrieved my recordings of this programme from various different airings it has had over the years, and compared them all closely, it does seem that the only reason for marking this one as 'shortened' is to indicate internally, to BBC schedulers, that the Dylan Thomas sketch has been removed.

A dispute blew up between the BBC and the Dylan Thomas estate, because the sketch is a word for word transcript of a small part of a much longer poem by Thomas, and the estate claimed that this use of a tiny part of the very long poem was a breach of copyright.

The point is not free from doubt, but of course the Beeb just caved in to avoid spending any time on the matter.

As I understand English copyright law, a poem is treated the same way as a novel. The author has sole ownership, and is the only person who can publish copies of it. If he wants, the author - it is his estate in this case, as he is deceased, but it makes no difference - can licence someone else to publish a copy.

In this case, broadcasting a reading of the item would constitute 'publishing' it, i.e. making a copy available to the public.

The estate did not authorise the inclusion of the poem in the LFMGCF broadcast.

In actual fact, there is an exemption if you only quote a small part of the work. I understand this to be five percent of the text. Anyone can publish part of the work, if the part doesn't amount to more than 5 percent of the full text. Because the item in LFMGCF appears on the face of it to be less than 5 percent of the whole, there seems to be no breach of copyright; but the BBC doesn't care to argue the point... for reasons that are unlikely to become clear again at the moment.

So, in law, I commit no breach of copyright in the previous sentence, because although I've quoted a bit of "The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy", the bit I quoted is less than 5 percent of the novel.
