Most fans seem to pour cold water on any possible leads with a "it'll be a hoax" attitude. More often than not it probably leads to nothing but occasionally the effort is repayed (like with the UCLA Avengers finds, as you say). Much more TV is out there to be found - of that i'm certain. Never say never! I've always thought if far more likely that lost tv would turn up due to someone taking the time to look through the collections of people who have no idea stuff is even missing, rather than implausible claims on the web that Mr X has a specific missing episode of Doctor Who for sale. Very true. And I believe there must be a lot of those out there (people who are unaware of the value of an item they have, that is).

yes there must be many such people considering the number of film collectors I've met who know nothing about missing TV. And these people are ther least likely to come across the rather hidden bbc appeals.

It's also worth mentioning that it was only by chance that The Lion (Doctor Who) didn't slip through the net. However, it was listed online for a few months prior to its chance recovery. If that episode hadn't been recovered, we would have gone from 1991 to 2004 without an episode recovery! Plus, only one episode would survive from my all-time favourite story.
Having said that, online missing episode hunting (to apply a label to it) is a major pain in the ar -- Ah-hem. I've spent HOURS on the site where I found Victim of the Dark listed and many, many more hours on sites that have had nothing of interest. Mind you, I only browse for such sites when I'm bored and have nothing better to do, so it's not really wasted time as I'd only be wasting it doing something else.

Unfortunately not. (Just in case you don't realise, "Ben" is me. I've explained elsewhere why I was using an alias for awhile.)

It's possible that I've missed something as I haven't read the entire thread but if it's true that a couple of people on this thread have a copy of this missing episode, why has it not been returned regardless of the outcome of this enquiry? The No Hiding Place listing on the main page still lists this episode as missing and I can't understand why when there seems to be a couple of decent people here who have copies.

Further to my above post would Dick Fiddly be able to forward the website to me so that I can buy or trade a copy of the missing material and then send it to him at the BFI? I want to see Victim of the Dark even if no one else wants to.
