I've noticed that the BBC have recently released the final five episodes from the final series (series 4) of Paul Temple screened in 1971. The episodes are black and white. Earlier research suggested that these particular episodes still exist in colour (625 line PAL Colour 2" VT). I was surprised therefore that they weren't released with the earlier DVD release containing 11 colour episodes from series 2, 3 and 4. I am aware that Kirch Media retained 39 episodes of the series (in English), although the exact whereabouts of their collection was unknown. Is anyone able to clarify?

There were also colour telerecordings as well I believe? but they have been off the radar for a fair while now.IIRC these were needed for sub titled in local language versions?
The situation with whatever is held by Kirch Media is that they are holding to ransom colour material as they know the BBC has lost it, and of course the BBC will not pay for it so, therefore too expensive to put on the DVD.
I don't blame them as Kirch Media probably paid for the German rights for the series from the original Co-producers with the BBC?
All 'as far as I know'

According to Wikipedia the episodes ZDF survive only in German. Also this set is frustrating if you've already purchased the Australian DVD release which included "The Guilty Must Die" and "Game, Set & Match" on their bonus disc.

Does anyone know why these five episodes couldn't have been synched up to the Kirch Media copies?

Yes: www.amazon.de/Francis-Durbridge-Paul-Temple-DVDsWhile browsing a little I got the feeling that they may not be 100% identical. Even so, if you buy both sets and know what to do, you could get the English sound to match the German picture. Too bad no-one seems to have recorded the audio off the television, otherwise some of the earlier episodes might be put back in English as well. (In theory they could be dubbed back into English if there are scripts, but I don't suppose that will happen.)

It no longer works for me either.
Elsewhere Charles Norton has confimed that the Germans have the English audio as well. But no deal could be struck and so far it looks like the German DVD sets won't include the English soundtrack.

anonymo at Roobarb reports having German-dubbed episodes of most of series 2-4.

It really is getting a bit complicated with regard to potential Paul Temples in the German archives.Maybe there is a chance that series 1 is out there somewhere.

Quite! It doesn't help that various people report things to three different sites. It seems that the Germans have AT LEAST all of s2-4 in colour. Probably in a slightly different cut. ZDF may not have more than that, but they or Taurus may also still have English soundtracks and/or series 1 (in the best possible scenario).

There are threads on this here,on Roobarb, and on the Mausoleum Club. There are knowledgeable people on each site who have something useful to contribute. While I find it all interesting,I admit I'm out of my league with Paul Temple. I can't see that there's any harm in coming to forum x and saying that someone in forum y says z.Hopefully, there'll be a synergy that'll lead to more being known more quickly.I can see that there's more redundancy, but that seems inevitable given that there are three sites with overlapping interests.I'd always recommend that everyone here keep up on relevant threads on the other sites, but that obviously doesn't happen.
