TOTP unseen on BBC since original show

The Dave Clark Five "Everybody Get Together" clip is an interesting challenge Ray.

When Einsfestival did their 70's TOTP re-runs they alledged that the reason why this edition wasn't shown was because it was in poor quality.

Well I've just watched those 3 shows from 1970 (all with the time clock on them) and I can't see that the 26/2/70 edition is any worse than the other two.

It would be good to hear from the Beeb as to whether this clip is in fact blocked by Mr Clark.

On a personal note I would love to see this edition shown again officially so we can all have a copy minus the current time clock copies that have been doing the rounds over the years.

Funny they say that 26-2-70 was of poor quality when they gladly showed 1-2-73 which is probably the worst quality show in the BBC TOTP archive with it's scratches and tramline damage. The Pickettywitch performance from 26-2-70 looks perfectly fine on the video that was released on. Interestingly enough I remember TOTP2 were set to show the Pickettywitch song but it was withdrawn at the last moment citing copyright or clearance issues...

I know Ming Clark's reputation comes before him, but even taking into account he used the TOTP Everybody Get Together to make a video a couple of years later after he'd dispensed with 3 of his loyal 5 ergo wangling a deal of sorts from the BBC it's hard to imagine what power he could wield to block any repeat of 26/2/70 when he evidently has no such hold over the TOTP Bits & Pieces performance, nor any of the Beat Club performance the DC5 did (and surely he would want to bury The Red Balloon if able?)

It's hard to say. I recall that one of DC5's Beat Club performances was included in a VH-1 compilation in the '90s. This was prefaced by an intro with cynical dig by Mark Ellen. On the repeat of the same edition later on, the DC5 appearance was mysteriously missing, with a modern George Michael video incongruously crashing in at that point without explanation (I may still have it on video)! So it seems DC can't take any form of criticism and does somehow manage to restrict use of DC5 clips.

The thing is, though, in my opinion the Everybody Get Together clip - heavily staged though it may well have been - shows both 1970 TOTP and latter-day DC5 in a very favourable light indeed. In fact, I'd go as far to say showing EGT on BBC4 in whatever context would actually generate sales for Mr Clark as well as a critical re-appraisal from the 2012 audience.

I sometimes wonder if the Beeb even remember that this show is in the archive - only ONE performance from it has ever seen the light of day on TOTP2, and as you say the little clip from 5-1-84. I also remember Pickettywitch showing up on Volume 2 of the 25 Years video they brought out.

None of those clips look any worse than the crackly old Supremes clip they wheel out every year so don't understand it!

Would the one clip they have shown be Kenny Rogers (Somethings Burning)?

I am positive there is nothing wrong with any of this episode at all - and I am sure we would all like it to be broadcast complete as Einfestival did for the other surviving 1970 shows. There must have been another reason why it was not shown - possibly the issue with Dave Clark?

Another performance from this show (besides Pickettywitch) that BR music used in a DVD compile done for Universal Music was White Plains "My Baby Loves Lovin" - although the live audio was replaced with a dub from the original recording for the DVD - again the picture quality is fine - as good as any of the other B & W film copies held for the other surviving shows.

The Rubettes - I Can Do It, i read on one of these websites that another performance exists other than 13-3-75 as an orphan (either 27-2-75 or 27-3-75) anyone know anything ? also for any Rubettes fans out there i remember seeing one of the Juke Box Jives (all wiped) on the pops there were a lot of girls dancing on stage with the band and with Alan williams (may have been Pans People)

The 27/2/75 TOTP's is not listed as wiped on the Popscene site but my information tells me that only 3 or 4 songs exist from that particular edition. Anyone know for sure if the BBC have this complete show in it's archives? If they did surely we would have seen a different studio Make Me Smile-Cockney Rebel by now.....not the version that everyone on the planet is familiar with which is in fact from 31/1/75.
