Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but I caught TOTP 2 on the other night and was annoyed to see they have blown up the 4:3 image to fit 16:9. I always find this irritating when they do clips shows of old programmes these days. It lowers the quality of the images, crops the top and bottom of the image and generally just makes it look awful. I'm a bit of a nut about things being shown in the correct aspect ratio, etc so these does get on my wick a bit.

The Monkees 'Daydream Believer' was poor quality as well, originally shot on 35mm I know the film exists in pristine condition, the BBC's copy looked washed out. Not a bad programme though, I was expecting much worse. Didn't notice any problems with the aspect ratio, I'm still watching on a Sony 34" CRT, 20 years old now and still going strong, when it's kaputt it looks like I'm on the bandwagon with the 16:9 widescreen.

On my TV, the edges were cropped out too. I checked the picture settings and it was all present and correct...... hmmm

What was the point of that! How many of those tracks were originally widescreen? Not sure about the 'YMCA' comment, don't recall that promo being part of 'Can't Stop The Music'. If it's the original promo film, then no: The lead singer had been fired before they made the movie, i.e. he's not in it. Damn shame, he had a fantastic voice.

All the music etc. documentaries i've seen in recent times on BBC-4 have also treated archive clips in this way. It reduces the quality quite considerably, as you say, and gives them a zoomed-in look. In these days of supposed high definition, it makes what are - in theory - good quality clips look terrible!

I take it you were all completely speechless and overwhelmed by the fantastic footage and presentation of the 2 TOTP2 specials (boy/Girl Bands) and the disco@the BBC programmes? Disco@the BBC was probably the worst ever in the series of @the BBC it was dire think they need to change producers and researchers. WE could have made a better programme with clips from youtube. What super sports, jolly old chaps at the beeb who listen to it's viewers, perhaps my critics who love to say "watch the programmes first" should take a hint, TOTP2 is not worth it anymore UNLESS they dig out the stuff from the dust that has never been seen ONCE!!!! gaztotp.blogspot.com/

it may not be worth it to you, but you missed a couple of things that havent been shown since first broadcast, and for that, its not worth missing. The girl bands was a good one actually.
though Disco at the BBC (sic) was a wasted mistake that a repeat of TOTP goes disco made up for.
call up all the unseen clips in order that they have and show them yes, but the lost stuff that resides elsewhere is a technical minefield in clearing.
