Neil Sedaka is just the studio audience dancing over the credits, the Slade a concert-footage promo before the band did Gudbuy in the studio a little later on.

That's right Dave, I was the one who wrote that after I've asked why they didn't show the 1971 Episode they had announced. BTW, the "My Ding-A-Ling" sequence isn't from TOTP at all, they only used it because it was in the charts in 1972 (hence it's inclusion in the christmas edition!), the footage is in perfect colour in the BBC archives and was filmed before an audienceat the BBC Television Theatre on 29/03/1972 for the BBC's "Sounds for Saturday" and was recently re-broadcast on BBC Four (January 2008/November 2010) and on Arte in Germany (July/August 2010): www.arte.tv/de/programm/242,date=1/7/2010.html www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0074rbcBoth programmes were shown in full colur, Arte however, in their TOTP the 70's season, showed "My Ding-A-Ling" in an edit of colour and b&w as on the TOTP Christmas edition from 1972! Regards, Oliver.

Blue mink was not on 16/11/72 but may have recorded a track for a future show. Hmm, this is a puzzle. I definitely have the official paperwork here for that edition as broadcast and it does claim to feature Blue Mink in the studio performing Stay With Me (recorded 15/11/72, transmitted 16/11/72).

"Stay With Me" was supposedly broadcast the week after, 23/11/72. However that week it had actually gone DOWN the charts from #27 to #31. Bearing in my mind though that the rules of what featured were not as rigid at that time as people may think, an act booked for 23/11/72 may have pulled out of 23/11/72 at last minute and that Blue Mink were extremely seasoned pro's beloved of the Beeb's Light Entertainment department and that "Stay With Me" shot into the Top Twenty the week after points to it being on the week after the surviving show.

Pete Seaton's excellent Poptastic site says:-

It's quite feasible that it was recorded for 16/11/72, but shown 23/11/72. Until we see the complete shows, I don't suppose we can be certain.

It's quite possible. It was shown on the Beeb twice on TOTP, 16/11/72 and 30/11/72. Both are on Pete's d/b as b/w performances. I would hazard a guess to say that Gladys did the song on the 16th and it was repeated. But again, no 100% certainty.

I'm wondering - with Gladys & The Jackson Five both making TOTP appearences around the same time - if they were both touring the UK as part of some latter-day Motown mini-revue...

No. The Jackson Five were frequently over here in '72, (inc the Royal Variety), but Gladys Knight had Desmond Dekker as support at some dates.
Interestingly Gladys left Motown in 73 and joined Buddah Records. The Jackson Five did support Gladys earlier in their career, notably in Chicago in 1968.

I am curious as to why this edition has never been repeated in full seeing as it's complete and in broadcast condition.
I would have thought Einsfestival would have shown it when they did their 70's TOTP re-runs.
I can only assume there must have been a clearence issue with one of the performances from this edition.

Well, that's a turn up! In colour too! So...what edition does it come from, I wonder, if not 16/11/72? Is it an isolated clip?

I've seen the Faces clip in colour a few times, is it the clip where Ronnie Lane (R.I.P) is a cardboard cut out, or is this from another performance of ANGEL from TOTP ? Also can someone tell me why is it that the T Rex performances exist from 72 when the rest of the show was wiped, did the BBC videotape destroyer take pity on Marc Bolan? ??
