Just a thought - has anyone contacted record collector magazine to run a feature on this recovery and the many other lost bits of televisual pop history? By definition record collectors possess the hoarding instinct (I should know, lol!) and these might be exactly the type of people who may have hung on to bits and pieces without realising what they have in their collections; it has happened many, many times before! That, and it would make a great article for record collector magazine; Bowie, Floyd, Hendrix etc, sounds right up their street. Who would be a good person to contact them about this?

I think that's a great idea to run a feature in record collector , and they may even do one without the need for anyone to contact them and Keith Badman is just the man for this.

Didn't they-frustratingly-used to do a review of say,an episode of Ready Steady Go!,and then in the final paragraph reveal if the material was known to still exist? Grrr.

Yes, but the recent ones have all been "still exists, but unlikely to ever get screened again" which, basically, is the same as.

This is probably known about. But just saw that there was a segment on the 10 o' clock news in regards to Jean Jeanie. As broadcast the same evening as the TOTP2 special. Just thought would share this here. Great to see even further publicity, and on a prime news segment to boot! www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-fS4h2HwvUCheers, Lance.

Just wanted to pop in and say a big thank you to John and everyone involved in the (re)discovery of this footage. I am a huge Bowie fan and of TV in general, especially Doctor Who, so to have this clip and the Who stuff see the light of day again made my Christmas!
Thank you a million times!

Maybe old news, but I just found this. David Bowie 'TOTP' footage boosts BBC Two BBC Two had its strongest Wednesday night in over a month largely thanks to Top of the Pops 2. The Christmas special, featuring previously lost footage of David Bowie performing 'The Jean Genie', pulled in an average of 2.56m (11.2%) between 7.30pm and 9pm. Between 8.30pm and 9pm, BBC Two overtook BBC One as TOTP2 peaked with 2.94m (12.7%) compared to The Impressions Show's 2.68m (11.5%). www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/news/a357137/david-bowie-totp-footage-boosts-bbc-two.html

Do you know if these are the updated viewing figures? There seems to be a wide discrepency between the immediate ratings, and those which include catch-up media.I suspect that TOTP would rank even higher in the latter.

Last Monday (9th Jan) Newsnight ended showing a short clip of 'The Jean Genie' to celebrate Bowie's 65th birthday. It was shown in it's correct aspect ratio and without Steve Wright yakking over the intro. Too bad the clip was only 40 seconds long. Nice to see a clip used on Newsnight though.

well its been over a month since we have heard anything more about Johns collection. I wonder how many of his tapes have now been played and cataloged? Also will we get to find out whats on the tapes in a posting on this forum?

Also will we get to find out whats on the tapes in a posting on this forum? I still speak to John regularly, and there's no chance the tapes will go awry. They are safe and well and preserved and I'm sure if anything happens, it'll go public when it can go public!
