I find it hard to believe the so called Top Of The Pops appearance was played on Pop Quiz. Surely if it was it would have been put on youtube by now? Probably the Mick Rock promo was shown, but until someone locates the Pop Quiz clip I don't believe it was featured. I only have one old Pop Quiz featuring Clem Burke (Blondie) which I think might have used a Bowie clip, but it definately was NOT 'Jean Genie' from TOTP. Mike, I'd like to hear more about this. Tims adamant it was shown, he saw it in 73, and recognised it again on Pop Quiz. I would like to hear from other sources though that they'd also seen it on Pop Quiz too. Never heard anyone else mention it. The other thing that puzzles me is, home videos were legion by the early 80's. You would imagine someone somewhere would have taped it, and it would have long been in circulation via Bowie fans/bootleg videos etc. Jean Genie from Musikladen 78 was shown, Starman, and at least one of the OGWT numbers Pretty Things. Apparently all Pop Quiz's exist in the archive. Someone needs to have a check through them.

I know this may sound a bit far fetched but one of my theories is this, just say they get their 1" or 2" tape and decide to record over the forty minute TOTP episode with a 30 minute episode of say Porridge (there were more 30 min shows than 40 minutes) then surely there must be tapes filed away archived that might have 10 mins of TOTP at the ends.....(if this was the case we'd have a lot of number ones and end credits to watch, such a shame Not far fetched at all. makes perfect sense. We've all got bits and bobs at the end of tapes.

God, it's depressing. Why didn't they have the foresight to save the greatest pop music archive in the world? Idiots. Regarding the showing on Pop Quiz, can anyone say which episode it featured on? Surely they can remember at least one of the guests so the show can be located and checked?

For anyone that still doubts TOTP and other material may well be sitting around at the BBC uncatalogued, check out the following thread which relates the story of the Stealers Wheel clip (i.e. Ray Langstone's post, three up from the bottom of the page): missingepisodes.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=totp&action=display&thread=5724&page=2Regardless of digitisation of most of the archive, there still seem to be isolated reels of unknown / forgotten content lying around. Now, both the Stealers Wheel and Bowie clips have long been recalled by many on here that saw them used in Pop Quiz in the '80s (myself included in the case of SW), so what are the chances of other reels of footage made for similar use still sitting on shelves (maybe including the Bowie clip, if Pop Quiz did use it)? Quite possible, i'd say.

The tape reel would of been completely "degaussed" before a new programme was recorded onto it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTUhGlH8OS4

Not always, as it happens. There are a few things where an item directly recorded over the last. There is a bit of a 1967 Vanity Fayre on the end of something else plus part of an early '70s Late Night Line-Up at the end of another tape. These are just a couple I can call to mind but it didn't always follow that tapes were erased first, although that was the ideal.

Blimey. When I worked in VT Current Ops, part of my job was to wipe 1" tapes. There was never any chance of a tape being recorded on that WASN'T degaussed.

Had a reply already....
to cut a long story, it's possible it may exist on a Pop Quiz....
""The only performance of Jean Genie (the Beeb) have (is on one of) the Bob Pratt tapes, and is listed as a poor quality film excerpt from a concert film; if that or another clip was used in "Pop Quiz" (one) can't tell without viewing all the episodes....the content of every episode of that has not been fully catalogued."" (edited response)
So the jury is still out, and I think we will have to keep looking at 'Pop Quiz'zes.
Any further info as of when the 'Bowie clip' Pop Quiz may have been broadcast, please let me know. Process of elimination is helpful....

Thanks Ray, The 'Jean Genie' TOTP's Pop Quiz clip was shown either as a question clip or as an outro clip, I think now it was a question based short clip as I couldn't believe what I was seeing! It must of been circa 1981/2. Boy George may have been a guest team member (Not 100% sure) but I seem recall his amazed expression after the clip was shown! I was both shocked and relieved as at least it would now be re-broadcast again & had been saved. I'd seen the original performance as a 11 year old in 1973 (Subsequently I spent years trying to convince people that JG had originally been performed on TOTP's and a 'live' version as well! Much incredulity ensued! Come the Pop Quiz show and I usually had my VCR at-the-ready but for some reason I didn't. I phoned a fellow video trader at the time & he didn't even see the broadcast let alone record it! I was told later there was some sort of national broadcasting strike and the programme was only transmitted in a few UK areas?

I can't even find a date for Boy George appearing!

I've had a look on the Times Digital Archive, and can't find mention of Boy George appearing, although the teams aren't always listed so that isn't to say that he never went on Pop Quiz. The show on 29th May 1982 apparently featured "archive film" of David Bowie, though. The line-up on that show was B.A. Robertson, Dave Gahan, Sal Solo, Paul Young, Jools Holland and John Cooper Clarke, if that rings any bells with anyone.

the more we can get this narrowed down the better. I may mention my seeking of this to a friend (who sits next to me at work) who is big in the Bowiesphere, the Wonderworld forum.

seems bonkers that a clip like this may be on the Pop Quiz tapes and not cataloged. Someone needs to go through the tapes, surely that wouldnt take long?....i guess its a question of access/ enthusiasm/lack of funding at the BBC

Rich, there are something like 47 episodes of Pop Quiz from its' early 80's inception, so that's 25 or so minutes x 47.....hang on....which is....1175 minutes, or nearly 20 hours worth of footage....it is a lot to go through.
