""The only performance of Jean Genie (the Beeb) have (is on one of) the Bob Pratt tapes, and is listed as a poor quality film excerpt from a concert film; if that or another clip was used in "Pop Quiz" (one) can't tell without viewing all the episodes....the content of every episode of that has not been fully catalogued."" (edited response)
Great Ray.
So I'd imagine that may be a clip from 'Ziggy Stardust The Motion Picture' unfortunately. If it's on the Bob Pratt tapes, is it really that hard for someone to check and investigate?
I'd happily volunteer to go down to the Beeb and go through all the Pop Quiz's on FF to check what rare footage lurks there to put this to bed once and for all.

I wouldn't mind being assigned that job either. In fact, I'd be happy to watch them all through at normal speed and note down every clip used. The shows could also be exported onto hard disk at the same time as part of the Beeb's digital archive project. It could all be done within a week...

How about a more 'radical' suggestion..... How about after transferring... REPEATING THEM ON TV. So everyone is able to view them.

The Bowie clip that a few claimed to have seen in Pop Quiz though was a studio appearance for the song though (not a film clip), so if it was seen at all, it wasn't in this particular edition. I'm still thinking though that the whole clip may possibly be found to exist on a reel somewhere, in the same way the Stealers Wheel performance was eventually discovered on a dub reel.

The other wiped TOTP clip people seem to remember seeing on 'Pop Quiz' was the Jackson 5 performing "Lookin' Through The Windows". Anyone know anything about that?

Well, I think the first thing is to collate which episodes of the show from the 81-84 run are online or have been seen and go through them by process of elimination. In addition, anyone who has a memory of the Bowie clip, please do try and remember which show....
But....it can't be from Ziggy Stardust - the Motion Picture....because the Jean Genie WASN'T ON that:-
"" "Hang on to Yourself" – 2:55 "Ziggy Stardust" – 3:09 "Watch That Man" – 4:10 "Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud" – 3:17 "All the Young Dudes/Oh! You Pretty Things" – 3:18 "Moonage Daydream" – 6:17 "Space Oddity" – 4:49 "My Death" (Jacques Brel, Mort Shuman) – 5:45 "Cracked Actor" – 2:52 "Time" – 5:12 "Width of a Circle" – 9:35 "Changes" – 3:35 "Let's Spend the Night Together" (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards) – 3:09 "Suffragette City" – 3:02 "White Light/White Heat" (Lou Reed) – 4:06 "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" – 4:20
[edit] 30th Anniversary 2CD Set (2003) track listing [edit] Disc 1
"Intro" (incorporating Beethoven's Ninth Symphony arranged and performed by Wendy Carlos) (Ludwig van Beethoven) – 1:05 "Hang on to Yourself" – 2:55 "Ziggy Stardust" – 3:19 "Watch That Man" – 4:14 "Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud" – 3:15 "All the Young Dudes" – 1:38 "Oh! You Pretty Things" – 1:46 "Moonage Daydream" – 6:25 "Changes" – 3:36 "Space Oddity" – 5:05 "My Death" (Brel, Shuman) – 7:20
[edit] Disc 2
"Intro" (incorporating William Tell Overture) (Gioacchino Rossini) – 1:01 "Cracked Actor" – 3:03 "Time" – 5:31 "The Width of a Circle" – 15:45 "Let's Spend the Night Together" (Jagger, Richards) – 3:02 "Suffragette City" – 4:32 "White Light/White Heat" (Reed) – 4:01 "Farewell Speech" – 0:39 "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" – 5:17""
So, the Jean Genie on the Bob Pratt tapes COULD, COULD be TOTP, but it's not from Hammersmith, he didn't perform it.

Well, I think the first thing is to collate which episodes of the show from the 81-84 run are online or have been seen and go through them by process of elimination. Here's a list of the episodes, dates and runtimes of early Pop Quiz snippets that I've managed to find online so far: S01E01 (4 July 1981) 29:23 S01E04 (25 July 1981) 28:23 S01E07 (22 Aug 1981) 26:54 S01E09 (29 Dec 1981) 19:29 S02E11 (19 Jun 1982) 7:23 S03E04 (7 May 1983) 16:58 S03E05 (14 May 1983) 27:14 S03E09 (11 June 1983) 28:10 S03E10 (18 June 1983) 26:00 S03E12 (24 Dec 1983) 10:02 S04E01 (26 May 1984) 29:03 S04E10 (25 Sep 1984) 34:59 S04E12 (9 Oct 1984) 29:55 S04E14 (28 Dec 1984) 32:15 The above totals over six hours viewing time and therefore covers 25% of the 1981-84 shows. There is another 10:52 of S01E09 posted online but it's been blocked by EMI: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vkcahSMg9EAs you probably know, S01E06 was junked by the BBC Archives before transfer, but Kaleidoscope paid for an outside contractor to restore it. It was screened at the recent music themed TV event: wipednews.com/2011/04/26/pete-murray-kaleidoscope-tv-event/Hopefully the other 1" masters transferred okay and the BBC now have a complete, broadcast quality, digital back-up of all episodes?

Thanks Simon. We need someone to go through whatever exists, bit by bit - and I'm not volunteering myself this time, I REALLY am too busy these days - to go through any episodes they can find from the 81-84 period and check to see if there is any Bowie on there.

Just out of interest, where these shows are said to be "online", where is that exactly?

I'll go through what I've found and index each clip shown. I should be able to manage a couple of episodes each day. I'd be interested to hear what episodes other members have access to. It seems Series 2 is pretty elusive at the moment, as I can only find 7 mins of footage posted on YouTube...

So, the Jean Genie on the Bob Pratt tapes COULD, COULD be TOTP, but it's not from Hammersmith, he didn't perform it. Ah but he did, it's the concert where he was joined by Jeff Beck for a Jean Genie/Love Me Do medley. Beck, unhappy with his performance/appearence, asked that his part be removed from the film. Here it is www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bjDK1Mtf2QQuite how or why Bob Pratt would have a copy of it I wouldn't know. Nor how it could get shown on Pop Quiz come to that? I mean, would Pennebaker (and Beck) allow it, when its pulled from the official release? I think not. IMDB has a full list of the episodes and panel members. No Boy George. www.imdb.com/title/tt0421431/episodes

Quite how or why Bob Pratt would have a copy of it I wouldn't know. Nor how it could get shown on Pop Quiz come to that? Bob's clips have turned up on all sorts of shows and it seems bits of his material did appear on Pop Quiz (albeit not properly catalogued in those days - possibly still not fully either). No one has a complete listing of what was on his reels so the possibility remains that the Bowie clip may have been recorded by him at the time and was still floating around when Pop Quiz was looking for material to utilise for clips.

It could well be the Hammersmith encore, which I'd forgotten about! Nonetheless, the Pop Quiz clip might not be a Bob Pratt tape. It could be, but....it might not be!
