Someone posted here earlier Boy George around 81/82, well if BG did appear on Pop quiz, Culture club didn't break through until sept/ Oct 82 with "Do you really want to hurt me", so thats 81 out of the question cos no one would have heard of him.

Yes, true, the earliest would have been the Xmas Special in 1982. If it was on a 'Boy George' episode....and I can't find one....

Quite how or why Bob Pratt would have a copy of it I wouldn't know. Nor how it could get shown on Pop Quiz come to that? Bob's clips have turned up on all sorts of shows and it seems bits of his material did appear on Pop Quiz (albeit not properly catalogued in those days - possibly still not fully either). No one has a complete listing of what was on his reels so the possibility remains that the Bowie clip may have been recorded by him at the time and was still floating around when Pop Quiz was looking for material to utilise for clips. Sure Laurence, I was meaning Jean Genie from Hammersmith though. Thinking about it, he (Bob Pratt) could only have aquirred it (Hammersmith Jean Genie) via Yentobs Arena archive for the Cracked Actor doc, which utilised many clips from Pennebakers film (though not Jean Genie). But, would Pop Quiz be allowed to show something that Beck had requested, and Bowie and Pennebaker agreed, should be completely removed from the concert film? I think its pretty doubtful, legally if for no other reason. Anyway, we know for sure the Musikladen 78 JG performance was shown, its just wether that missing TOTPs JG performance was too.

Bob Pratt's tapes included the Pistols' Today appearance (Thames), so....that was probably semi-legal at best. Well, actually, I can bore on this subject, so let me NOT do that.
Please start finding Pop Quizzzes and wading through them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bob's recordings contain all sorts of diverse things (not only BBC material but items from ZDF Beat Club, cinema movies, pop promos etc.) and a copy of the Bowie Hammersmith film may well have been sitting at the BBC for screening or clip use (e.g. in OGWT) at some point. Bob just took recordings from whatever took his fancy. A copy could easily have been accessible for him to take a recording. It's not unusual that a bit of it may have been on one of his reels.

At the moment, Hammersmith seems the most likely....but....lest we forget....that MIGHT not be the 'Pop Quiz' Bowie, so....

Shall we start a new thread on Pop Quiz and each of us who have any info on individual shows can post that info there? We can keep this thread for info on 'Jean Genie'? I have the episode with Clem Burke as guest, I will dig it out and list what clips are on it.

Sounds good to me, Mike. I've got a few Pop Quiz editions but sadly none with Bowie clips.

There must be a Bowie head out there that can tell if that Youtube audio is from the hammersmith concert ? to me it sounds quite removed from the single version, but other people have stated on here that the whole thing was completely live, would they have had the techno back then to rig that upjust for a one off performance, ur talking about miking up amps and drums ? the drums sound very low in the mix, could just be the basic quality of the recording.......will we ever know ??

From the 'Any Day Now' book by Kevin Cann
Wednesday 3 January 1973 David, The Spiders and Mike Garson run through three takes of 'The Jean Genie' for the Top Of The Pops cameras at BBC's Television Centre. Ronson makes the most of the opportunity to play his guitar at top volume. "He loved it" said road manager Will Palin in 1993. "He cranked it up as far as it would go and blew the television engineer's ears away. Typical Mick." Dressed in their unusual stage outfits, The Spiders spend time between takes in the BBC bar. "An episode of Doctor Who was also being recorded, so there were actors in futuristic costume drinking there", said Trevor Bolder. "People were approaching us asking what parts we were playing."
Thursday 4 January 1973 The Top Of The Pops recording is broadcast. The band's third take is chosen, even though it contains a mistake when the musicians fail to start the final section simultaneously. "Everyone thought it was me" said Bolder in 1995. "The whole band missed the cue, it was a real mess." Now if only we could find an isolated tape containing all three takes of 'The Jean Genie'. I can dream!

Please do not take Boy George as gospel. The Boy George reference should definitely be ignored as he did not appear in any of the 81-84 Pop Quiz episodes: missingepisodes.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=totp&action=display&thread=6294As you can see in the Pop Quiz thread, we have found a live Jean Genie clip that was shown in S01E02 but it isn't the TOTP version. The screenshot confirms it was from Musikladen 1978. A full performance of this can be found here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3b2zNs22CkPlenty of Pop Quiz episodes still to catalogue, though, so the search goes on...
