If someone wants me to ask Alan next week, just message me and I will do it. All being well I'm trying to meet up with him briefly in the late summer for a quick chinwag while he's over here.

Just had a message from a member of The Californians who confirms that both his group and The Bonzo Dog Band were the guest stars on the 31st December 1969 edition (and that it was broadcast in colour). The TVTimes didn't give any details for that particular edition other than the regulars.

Very interesting! I wonder what they performed? Never heard about that performance before.

The Bonzos split at the end of 1969 so I'm assuming that was their last tv appearance..........(did the reformed 'Lets make Up and be Friendly' version of the band do any TV?)

Indeed The Bonzos announced their split in December 1969 but they had live dates booked into March 1970 which they honoured so March 1970 was when they truly ceased to exist. This TV appearance is a new one on me since like Laurence, I'd always been led to believe that the performance of "Noises For The Leg" on the BBC "Ten Years Of What?" show as their last TV appearance.
They had released a single in November 1969 and would release one in January 1970 so I'm guessing they would had performed one of those 4 songs so a toss up between I Want To Be With You, We Were Wrong, You Done My Brain In or Mr Slater's Parrot.
The Californians were an interesting little band. Their current single was their last so they would had been performing their version of the old Fortunes classic "You've Got Your Troubles." A couple of singles I always enjoy is the ethereal "Golden Apples" from 1967 and the insanely catchy "The Cooks Of Cakes And Kindness" from early 1969.

The Bonzos appearance on Ten Years of What I heard was their last TV appearance (of the 68-70 line up), so the appearance of the Golden Shot is an eyeopener.
Their last gig was March 1970, if I recall; Rob Dickins, later CEO of WEA was the Ents Officer at the Uni and booked them. He also later married Cherry Gillespie....
I would not have thought the Bonzos performed Urban Spaceman on a show over a year after it's release, but....I have been wrong before!

I believe take two was transmitted (also online....), and this was not transmitted, as Vivian slightly garbles the intro (even though it's very funny!). You'll note both takes feature a live monologue and live theremin, making them both unique!
