The Move doing 'Chinatown' ANYWHERE is, for me, as important a clip as the Floyd one.....honestly!! I obtained a full colour 'Tonight' from 'Roger Whittakers World of music' some years back (plus other acts from his 1971 series. YouTube scumbag posted it for a while against my strict wishes at the time)
I've only mentioned this now after a long silence because I feel people need to see and hear of these clips. I'm SICK of bureaucracy and red tape.....sick of it. We love these bands and would and have bought anything and everything by them. I don't feel any shame anymore. The more of a groundswell for these clips the more chance we have of seeing them legally. 'Missing Episodes' has the power to do this, I really believe that.

Surely having these clips up on Youtube helps to create the groundswell you speak of Thomas, so that confuses me because they don't even need to be posted in a high resolution! However I totally agree with you on the other points.  |

There looks like some really good acts on this show quite a few of these artists also appeared on totp but are missing ,do any lift off shows from series 2 3 and 4 exist or are they all missing.

On a slight aside, Ayshea and Roy Wood were very much an item back in the early 70's. They both did the face-paint thingy as a sign of love (ahh) and the famous 'A' on Roy's forehead was for Ayshea.  Thomas. I remember that clip. There's a performance existing of 'See my Baby Jive' from Russell harty that exists; probably recorded the same week he did 'Lift off' with the 'A' in star on his forehead. Laurence may have filled in already but the 'Lift off' 'appearance with the 'A' star dates c. April 1973. Roy Wood appeared later that year promoting solo single 'Dear Elaine'. The existing TOTP studio appearance shot for the song indicates he had a Lute for that song. There's a very nice film promo of it existing from the time on a commercial pop DVD that I recall also being run. The 'A' appearance on 'Lift Off' I believe was also for 'See my Baby'. But the bit I recall mainly was a pop song Wood had specifically penned for Ayshea called 'Farewell'. For the song she dropped her usual middle of the road voice and adopted an almost operatic; strong nasal voice in the Wood style. I recall I think 'The Daily Mirror' or possibly 'pop swap' magazine running a feature in which Roy Wood said 'I think I could make a really good singer out of her'. In the appearance Ayshea also had Roy Wood make up; with an 'R' in her star. The background in B+W was plain white but on the clips I've seen of the show since seemed to be light blue on colour sets. A waist up shot was shown; with Ayshea swaying side to side. I assume this was a pre recorded VT insert as I don't remember her having the make up elsewhere in the show. What I do recall was an out of breath Roy Wood running up after his bands performance and announcing the next act instead of Ayshea; which I think was Slade. I think Noddy Holder and Dave Hill then introduced the next band instead of her; like a running joke. Could well have been Ayshea actually did the vocal live to a taped backing and couldn't remove the make up in time to do the links. However so far as I'm aware the show was pre taped and not live. I also recall they CSO'd a line of duplicated Roy Woods keyed in at intervals behind her. This was a sort of vision mix corridor effect. In one he would be playing a French horn with one hand inside it; the next oboes. A sort of Roy Wood orchestra. I did write to archivist Sylvia Cowling and she said in the 90s; that tape of the show had been wiped over the years. 'Lift Off' was said to not have been sold overseas; however another thread some time back stated rumours of off air Shibaden tapes of some shows from this period. Though the validity of this claim hasn't been confirmed to my knowledge; somebody said that a clip of T Rex's only studio performance was doing the rounds of the Bolan fan club. There was a similar claim also for Cockney Rebel that seemed to be pretty genuine. I recalled T Rex on 'Lift Off' many times simply as they employed a number of film promo inserts on the show. A few were the 'Mountain Music Spectacular' ones ('Get it On'). They also used the promo for 'The Groover' where Bolan is animated changing into different outfits. That T Rex performance is feasible to exist as Bolan haad a video at the time and used to tape his performances off air. Though these were believed destroyed it is known that various souvenirs wandered off whilst Bolan was living in South London during the 1970s. That might have included the Lift Off tape. The appearance was apparently another pre recorded insert though I don't know if it was film or VT. But that's another factor which makes its survival feasible. |

Think it's just those two from the lastl 1974 series that exist; the one featuring 'Bay City Rollers' and another seperate week which featured a Barry Blue record. I'm not sure but one of these may have been the last show which could feature some clips as a retrospect.
However there are also the two 'Sweet' 74 performances which includes the end titles and possibly came form the bands own archive. It would either be segments copied out by Technicians as a favour to the band; or their own interest. Or an off air recording by a band member themselves; or a 'Sweet' fan.
The ITN insert details for other items called 'Lift Off' were dated 1970 and seemed to be a different series but ITN did list I think 3 episodes from 1970; the masters of which shouldn't exist unless the larger Airport hangar storage unit has been invetigated.
As a rider; 'Lift Off' also used as far as I recall these bought in clips:
'T REX - Get it On' (Mountain music Spectacular)
'SWEET - Poppa Joe' (Mountain music spectacular)
'T REX - The Groover' (EMI promo film).
I think they also used the 'Music Spectacular' ones for Middle of the Road (various); and 'Son of my Father' (Chicory Tip).

That clip was the lost "Teenage Dream" from TOTP.

I must admit, i'd never heard of a lot of these acts outside of Lift Off either (and i've played in bands and taken an interest in pop generally for most of my adult life)! Peter & The Wolves? Esprit De Corps? Tea & Symphony? I wonder if any T.V. appearances from any of these acts or others is archived anywhere? It would be interesting to know what type of music they played. I'd guess M.O.R. / bubblegum.
