and ive just duplicated most of what jon and Grahame Howard have just said....
oddly firefox told me there was 1 page of posts and now after posting theres 4 so i missed a lot of the thread
Jeff I think the best way is to bung an advert in trade and exchange in your area ...something generic like "16mm film prints of TV shows wanted"

Unfortunatly Jeff TVNZ put most of those film prints (about 10,000) into two shipping containers on the seatoun warves in wellington in the late 80s or thereabouts....... around 1994 they had the NZ film archive go through them and remove anything that was NZ related and the archive was under strict orders to destroy the remainder ( I was told by a reliable source that people on a govt work scheme did a lot of the sorting...but another reliable source told me it was mostly staff from the NZ Film archive.....) they recovered quite a bit of stuff then destroyed the rest, now before we get too upset 10,000 film prints ISNT a lot in terms of the total output of a TV station (its just over a years worth if they showed say 25 shows a day from 16mm).......but all the same it is tempting to wonder what was in there..... (I have it on good authority that quite a few 16mm prints of cinema released movies were in there, a lot of NZBC/TVNZ archival footage was found ) Sadly the reason they were stuck in shipping containers in the first place was probably partially due to the number of doctor who fans who were starting to bug TVNZ about them at the time........ having said that stuff did go "walkies "...... I've seen a (part) listing of this material. Just to clarify - 90% of this stored material was American (there were lots of eps of Lassie!), some ITV stuff. And very very little in the way of BBC material. It was mostly all b/w. Jon Preddle

It must be said, I do hope more missing DW surfaces in NZ. It's just that TVNZ / NZ Archives are not the places to look.
If anything, private collections and independant film depositories are the places to concentrate one's search. Neil's idea of placing an ad in 'Trade and Exchange' is a great idea!
I've seen film cans at collectors and antique fairs... so if any more DW shows up in NZ it will be in the most unlikely places...

Jon/Neil/Graham, Is there anywhere in Dunedin left to look? I mean afterall we were the last city in the country to have the prints... Once Dunedin had finished with them, all prints were returned to TV HQ in Wellington and placed into storage to await disposal instructions. But one thing you might like to do is go to the National NZ documents Archives down there and do some searches through their holdings. I know that NZBC has some stuff filed there. I went to the Wellington archives just last week, and found some interesting Who-related documentation - about which all will be revealed in the next issue of TSV! Jon

I might just do that. By the way I went into the old NZBC building last week and stood in the archive (called "The Vault") where the Dr Who films must've rested 30 years ago awaiting transmission... ...well, waited briefly given the tight turnaround...

Jon Jon, if I thought you knew anything about a)TV Ontario children's programs, or b) GPTV showing TV Ontario childrens programs, then you would probably know why I'm smiling at you post. If not, just "Read All About It".

Sorry to nickpick, Neil, but the wharves where these containers where was Seaview in Lower Hutt, not Seatoun which is by the airport... Jon
