The 20th century TOTP has been available for nearly ten years via fan club releases, also been repeated on German Saterlite a lot. Shame I thought it might have been the full length version which had been unearthed. it was also utilised in the 20th century boy promo video in the 90's!

...as I said, it was latched onto by the press. But there is other performances not transmitted before in the UK - and that unique John's Children footage with Mark Feld (and not the promo)!

These shows always disappoint collectors. I don't know why we hope for so much, when have we ever seen a documentary that suddenly shows a fantastic bit of archive and then continues to play it in full. All we ever get is a few seconds so it's what I expected. I'm sure the Johns Children footage will be a treat but it won't be in full, so let's just enjoy the show as a show anyway. Great to see Marc Bolan on television anyway. At least the DVD includes a few extra promos.

My brief was to make a documentary about Marc - not show full length performances. The only show that will not disappoint collectors will be TOTP2 as one of the few shows that shows full length performances. You also have to bear in mind the archive costs to use clips are not cheap: I had to pay ZDF for the wiped TOTP for example and it weren't cheap. All archive costs and when the libraries realise they have rare stuff, they put their price up, especially when there's an anniversary in the offing such as with Marc. I think the only docs that will satisfy you Atomic23 are on DVD only and are just performances such as this one www.amazon.com/Real-Thing-Performance-Marvin-Gaye/dp/B000EPFDAI/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-1808415-5703007?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1189605253&sr=1-1Also, I have to say that trying to a biog doc with long form performances plays havoc in trying to get any pace/rhythm into it - so not only costs, but a style issue, and it's just not something the major broadcasters want in my experience. Actually you will see as much of the John's Children footage as there is, slo-moded to boot.

A little is better than nowt Very true. Mark makes a good valid point about using clips instead of full performances in documentaries. As he points out, it costs to use such clips and one has to keep an eye on the budget but not only that, the rhythm and pace is important to a documentary and complete performances do affect the flow. Whilst the big fan would love such an approach, documentaries are designed to be watched by the widest audience possible and they'd likely get bored with complete songs because they want to know the story. I also like to think that clips of songs as seen by somebody who may not be that familiar with Marc Bolan may well entice the viewer to go out and check out more of the music. It is touching that Marc Bolan gets commemorated on such anniversaries and that it keeps interest in him and his music alive. Whether one likes him or not, he was an iconic figure who packed a hell of a lot into his very short life and whose influence continues to resonate to this day. I know I will enjoy seeing the documentary and will most certainly be buying the DVD. I'd like to thank Mark not only for making this new film but also for taking the time to share info on it with us all here. Its been greatly appreciated by me thats for sure.

I was trying to say I was still looking forward to this programme anyway and never expect to see full footage in documentaries (even though I'd like to). Wasn't trying to slag it off, I just wish we could see the rare footage in full somewhere. I'm glad this is on TV and will both watch it and buy the DVD too.

Who needs complete performances ? as we have them already.

Yep well done Mark, best quote Steve Harley sum up MB in 3 words "I miss him"
Just out of curiosty how much did ZDF charge for about 10 seconds of "their" TOTP footage and isn't said footage still involved in much legal wrangling, said footage on the T.Rex on TV DVD is credited/copyrighted to BBC/ZDF Licenced by BBC.
