I wish I was still in touch with Dave Jeffcock. He went thru this stuff with a fine-tooth comb and compiled his own lists as to what the BBC had and what they didn't. He said that loads of stuff wasn't properly documented. There was some TOTP stuff on the end of a "Morecambe and Wise" tape (from a previous recording?) to name one instance.

sure, & there are odd bits here & there that survived by being shown on other programs. also some of the listings in the register are out of date & incorrect, usually meaning the items are actually gone.

When VTOL was going, I once saw the official BBC entry for one of the Pratt compilations. None of the database fields had been entered correctly - the whole tape was just listed as one long bit of prose with gaps and " " where someone hadn't been able to figure the songs/shows out. I guess that sort of thing means stuff must get overlooked when running searches on things against certain fields etc. There were other entries with things just like "Top Of The Pops 1971" and "Top of the Pops films" and no other details. I think the former may have ended up being that tape with Middle of the Road, Blodwyn Pig and The Rattles (I think) on it?

Very Interesting indeed. Would love to know what that bit of TOTP material on the end of Morcambe and Wise tape from a previous recording. From the sound of things, I would think that there is material that is not properly cataloged in the BBC archive database. And that with the current database revisions, archive transfers, etc. things will continue to be updated, and the gaps filled as best as possible. Just takes time, as most things do.
Cheers, Lance.

it is alot more detailed & specific than that now with very few of the ?? but it does list things that arent there anymore.
the rattles is listed on the october 70 show, & blodwyn pig on the jan 70 show in b/w & in colour on a vt comp from that show all in colour.
the 70-71 totp vt films are all listed & detailed properly, & theres alot of them.

think that covers all the bbc ones john but there are possibly a few clips from other shows, aswell as the well known existing clips of the bands like the kinks, free, pickettywitch, etc.

26/2/70 also exists. 12/2/70 doesn't though.

Thanks for pointing that out Neil, I have a spreadsheet with the archive status and other bits and bobs listed for each show, and I had entered "Exists" against the wrong date. I just filtered the spreadsheet and didn't check it before posting, oops.

John Lennon's "Instant Karma" does exist from 12/2/70 though so at least something has survived from that show.

Yes... what I call the "red" and "blue" versions which is rather fitting considering the famous Beatles double albums that came out 2 or 3 years after!
The red one is the one the BBC had and showed on TOTP2 several times and the blue (with Mal Evans looking ill at ease on tambourine!) was the one returned by Yoko Ono - along with a new copy of the red one. The blue one was dubbed on the "Lennon Legend" DVD so I've not heard it with its original soundtrack which would had featured a live Lennon vocal.
I presume the red one was the one screened on 12/2/70? Does anybody know for certain?

John Lennon's "Instant Karma" does exist from 12/2/70 though so at least something has survived from that show. Bobbie Gentry's Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head also exists from 12/2/70 (in Disco), so there are at least two performances from that edition. Not sure which Lennon clip was shown on which date (12/2/70 or 19/2/70); one was on each date but I don't know if there's a sure way of identifying their individual tx dates (don't think any paperwork at BBC Caversham could provide the kind of detail needed to solve that riddle). I'd like to know that one myself!

Thanks for that Lawrence... forgot about the Bobbie Gentry clip. Interestingly that was on the same set as the blue version of the Lennon clip with the circular light pattern behind but with a different colour scheme.
Its a pity the BBC paperwork is unlikely to solve the riddle of which clip was transmitted when.
Another mystery which may be solvable is in both the Lennon clips there is a guy with an afro haircut constantly taking photos and what's more he's onstage with the band. John and Yoko being who they were probably told the TOTP crew this photographer was part of the band, but any idea who he is?

The 'Yoko knitting' performance definitely existed in the mid-'80s as I remember a clip being shown on (I think) Whistle Test, though the quality was ropey. I think it was a colour 'tele-recording' (not sure if that's the correct terminology!).
