Hi William,
no ive never seen the full performance of the Shads "dont Make My Baby Blue" .... it would be great for inclusion on TOTP2 soon wouldnt it?
Re. NME Poll Winners Concert 1964, Cliff and the Shadows starred alongside the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Manfred Mann, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Freddie and the Dreamers and Kathy Kirby in this annual poll winners concert held at the Empire Pool, Wembley in London on 26th April 64. It was first of the annual concerts to be televised.
Co presented by David Jacobs and Jimmy Saville this feast of pop featured over 20 chart topping acts of 1964, many of whom were presented awards at the end of the show by guest star Roger Moore.
An edited version of the concert was made into two one-hour shows and televised on consecutive Sundays.
Cliff and the Shadows closed the first of the two ABC broadcasts on the 3rd May. The Beatles closed the second show that focused mainly on the Merseybeat sound, which had swept the nation that year.
Sadly Cliff and the Shadows contribution to this concert has gone missing, even though it was broadcast on television originally.
When watching the 2 shows on video now it is obvious the first show is about quarter of an hour shorter than the second show.
Heaven knows where its gone. I think its tragic that programmes were mutilated and dissected in this slipshod fashion.
The Shadows performed "Dance On","The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt" and "FBI". Cliff opened his set with his version of Ray Charles "I Wanna Know" then went on to sing "Dont Talk To Him" (his hit from the previous Christmas) "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On", "Bachelor Boy" (number one hit from from the "Summer Holiday" film of 1963) and ending with his most contemporary hit "Im The Lonely One".
All that can be found is the Pathe news film of the Shadows performing a short clip of "Dance On" (picking up the award for the Best Instrumental Group of 1964) and Cliff singing "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" after which Roger Moore handed him his award for being voted World Number One Singer.
