very interesting: I didn't know that some clips of the bands 1966 TOTP studio performance existed! What is origin of these clips? I also was unaware oft he existance of a promo for "Come together": could anyone post a desciption of this video? The story of the 1966 TOTP is that someone who used to work on the show used to collect films and film equipment in general. When he came to sell his collection, his reels of film were included. Among the films was the complete 1966 TOTP that included 'Paperback Writer' & 'Rain'; apparently the collector didn't think it was of any great value!!. From there the film made it's way to a collector in the States - who IS very well aware of it's rarity!. The promo film for 'Come Together' is basically a collection of clips taken in and around Abbey Road, of fans and the local scenery; from what I can tell, there is no sight of the fabs - the picture is deliberately shaky in hand-held cine camera fashion. As far as I know, it was only aired once in the U.K., on a show the name of which escapes me at the moment, but I think it was a late night 'arts' programme. Apparently when the visual material was being collected together for the 'Anthology' documentaries, producers of shows from the sixties were sent letters saying that if they didn't hand over any promo films they had, Apple would go to court to get them back. As the producer of the show that showed the 'Come Together' clip said : ''Apple used to hand these films out like free sweets, now they threaten to sue people instead of saying 'could you let us have them back please?' ''.

Apple are a very odd lot, as some on here know I returned to them a high quality recording of the missing mike and bernie winters big night out 64 audio recirding (that only a poor quality version exists (on the mythology bootleg), and all Apples gave as a farm of response was to have a go at me because i had a list of my Beatles Boots on my web site, thats gratitude for you!

Yes Adam I was also of the opinion that The Beatles performing Paperback Writer/Rain from TOTP's 66 had been wiped and that the only thing that survived from 66 was a Stevie Wonder song.
It begs the question that if the performance exists in the States will it ever be shown perhaps on the internet if the quality of what survives is not of broadcastable quality?? I am sure Beatles fans wouldn't mind seeing it no matter what the quality. I think I have colour photos somewhere from a Beatles book I bought years ago that has photos of that particular TOTP's performance from 66.

I didn't know of there being a poor quality Paperback Writer TOTP clip being available for the Anthology either! I know about the story of the TOTP edition changing hands though. Let's hope that the person who has it is enough aware of it's rarity to look after it. I know Paul McCartney made reference in an interview that other material was available to use that was of poor quality but he didn't say what - it was probably this.
There were quite a few performances specially shot for TOTP (apart from 15/4/65 and 16/6/66 appearances, which are all a lot of people know of). The Beatles made several earlier appearances (pre-recorded) in the TOTP studio too - all seemingly gone now. All the Intertel / NEMS videotape and film promos still exist though; a valuable visual resource that is not being used at all! There are even more than those listed by Peter Chadwick too.
Apple behave very strangely towards fans, to say the least. They seem so paranoid about copyright enfringement too. They need to get some people on board who are more aware of how to make the most of the archive. The Anthology WAS a very watchable series but it DID miss so many chances. Now it's out on DVD, the mistakes are kind of set in stone; I can't see another chance at dipping into the archive and doing things properly for 10 years maybe. Even a no-frills, bog-standard "video greatest hits" type of DVD is so obviously unavailable...

was the "pop goes.." kinks "days" recorded at the same time that they did "victoria" it looks the totp studio, or was it a special recording just for the show, on 11/11/69 when they did "victoria" it was still b/w unless they had the colour equipment as well by then .

The Kinks' "Days" would have been recorded at a different time to "Victoria". They were different shows really; it wasn't TOTP. "Victoria" would still be b/w (just a few days before BBC-1 went colour, in fact) . The 11/11/69 recording would have been for the very last TOTP in b/w.

I wonder if it was recorded at the end of one of the colour shows we may never know, the cliff richard "all my love" clip was a bit murky, it looks more like they played a video recording(jumps and lines rather like the byrds clip) could it be a repeat of the 30/11/67 or was it recorded for the xmass show or just a very bad TR copy its just that the rest of this show seems to ok quality wise
