I'm intrigued Peter. In both of the publicity photos I've seen of Mick Clarke with the band they are just a 4 piece. Mick told me Brian Poole had left when he joined and that he decided to go back with the Symbols after 3 months or so. Yet, there's a photo of Chip with the guys including Brian Poole? Hi Mark, The Tremeloes' first two singles without Brian ('Blessed' in June 1966 and 'Good Day Sunshine' in August 1966) and Brian's first two solo releases ('Hey Girl' in May 1966 and 'Everything I Touch Turns To Tears' in September 1966) happened while Brian Poole and The Tremeloes still toured together - the final split didn't come until the early weeks of 1967, when 'Here Comes My Baby' started taking off. Mick Clarke replaced original bassist Alan Howard in early May 1966, and Chip Hawkes replaced him in mid August 1966 (so it is probable that Mick is on the first two Tremeloes singles). I've seen at least three photos of Mick Clarke with Brian Poole and The Tremeloes, but not any as a 4-piece (which doesn't mean they don't exist!)... can you share them? Attachments:

Yet another Mick Clarke era photo (the A-side was a Brian Poole solo track, but the B-side was by Brian Poole and The Tremeloes).

Well that would explain it. I would imagine the band with Brian Poole had gig and recording contracts to fulfill. Sorry but I don't have copies of the photos Peter. One was a studio shot that was in Mick's possession. The other co-incidentally was taken outdoors. I seem to recall a van being parked nearby in the photo. Maybe it was taken at the same time as the one you've posted above?

Press Release, 30th November 2023
THE TREMELOES - EVEN THE BAD TIMES ARE GOOD! Famously signed to Decca instead of The Beatles, Brian Poole and The Tremeloes spent four years topping the charts, touring the world, and appearing in movies. Incredibly, when they split from their former lead singer, The Tremeloes went on to even greater success, with the four members - Alan, Dave, Rick & Chip - becoming one of those few bands (The Beatles & The Monkees among them) to be known just by their first names. With exclusive interviews with band members and dozens of previously unseen photos, acclaimed music historian Peter Checksfield tells The Tremeloes' story - via their many record releases - in this remarkable book.
Available now from Amazon, in hardback & e-book, & paperback should be available within 24 hours!
