Watching The Daemons again via the recently released Season 8 Blu Ray I was reminded of a question I had meant to ask before: What’s the reason for omitting the excellent 1993 ‘Return to Devil’s End’ reunion/documentary by Reeltime Pictures from the set? Reeltime have only fairly recently released Return to Devil's End on DVD and download for the first time. There would be very little reason why they would be interested in selling the rights for a third party to use it and kill their own revenue stream in the process. The third disc of the 1996 convention, I have a video I recorded too, a shame it is too late to be used. I also have recordings from two small conventions with Mary Tamm and Elisabeth Sladen from the late 1990's.

Blimey, they’re packing the Classic Who releases in the last quarter of the year a bit aren’t they?! I was expecting this one in 2022. Given my very finite financial resources at the moment I was hoping for 2022 as well! Regardless, the promised special features look superb - though I’m slightly disappointed that Nightmare of Eden gets the ubiquitous ‘new fx’ upgrade rather than surely the far worthier candidate, The Creature From The Pit. Indeed, one would’ve hoped that that serial’s legendarily infamous ‘ green willy beast o’doom’ would’ve been bestowed with a bit of pathetic-ameliorating CGI by now... Also impressed that Shada is both included and in purportedly enhanced form with upgraded animation. Even better, the original bodged VHS version is included too. The only other feature I would’ve perhaps liked is a ‘then and now’ in Paris for City of Death. Hardly a deal breaker though. Preordered. Should be good!

My guess about creature of the pit not getting the cgi treatment is partly because it's not overly popular even with its sfx problems its probably the weakest story on the set and theres so much of the screen dominated by the creature you probably couldn't effectively hide redo without a huge cost outside of the releases budget. I'm glad eden got the treatment as in my opinion it's the best story in the season by a country mile.

Well to be fair I was subconsciously using the (admittedly not quite equivocal) CGI-rendered Mara (of which substantially improved the climax to Kinda) as an example of what could conceivably be done with dodgy Doctor Who monsters using modern technology. Regardless, if only ‘Eden’s new fx could also somehow fix Lewis Fiander’s distractingly nondescript foreign accent then it would be perfect! Indeed, Fiander surely offers up a worthy competitor to Anthony Ainley’s ‘you inzult zee keeeeeng?!’ in the outrageous accent stakes! Oh well, can’t have everything I suppose.

Who know what the South African accent would have changed to in the era "Eden" was set in?!!!

I think it’s meant to be Germanic rather than South African.

I think it’s meant to be Germanic rather than South African. At the time I thought he was basically impersonating Peter Sellars!

Pointless confession time but I haven’t noticed the sparseness of animated Cambridge’s 1979 population on account of attempting and failing to watch animated Shada three times now; prematurely switching off on each occasion as inexorable disinterest took hold! I fared much better with the previous ‘existing footage/Tom Baker missing segments narration’ combo though hence why I’m pleased to see this version included in the upcoming ‘Collection blu ray. Either way, what I have seen of Shada I consider it to be a highly conceited and self-indulgent Adams story really, not my cup of tea. Still, perhaps with these promised enhancements I may, at long last, finally come to appreciate the concealed genius of Shada that more complimentary fans insist is there!

I share many of your thoughts jaspel, I really don't rate any of Adam's writing except pirate planet. That goes for hitch hikers too (I'll go and hide from all the shell fire)

Happy New Year all! Fingers crossed 2022 has some good news for us all in terms of missing episodes - animation most likely, but we can always hope for good news on recoveries in the BBC's centenary year! What a treat that would be!
In the meantime, thought it would be handy to give an update on the BluRay collection sets. Thoroughly enjoyed working my way through the Season 17 set at stages over the Christmas period and fingers crossed for more to come - maybe quite soon if rumours are to be believed!
Of the 20 seasons with no missing episodes, we are at the halfway mark with 2 Pertwee, 4 Tom Baker, 1 Davison, 1 Colin Baker and 2 McCoy's released to give us 10 limited edition sets out in the UK, 5 of which also have the Standard version released, with one more coming later this month. I think all are out in the US in their own version of the standard format, with the exception of the recent Season 17 release. Summary below:
Season 8 (both sets out) Season 10 (Limited edition only at present) Season 12 (both sets out) Season 14 (Limited edition only at present) Season 17 (Limited edition only at present) Season 18 (both sets out) Season 19 (both sets out) Season 23 (both sets out) Season 24 (Limited edition only at present) Season 26 (Standard Edition being released on 17th Jan)
For the 6 seasons with missing episodes, once TAS is released this year, we will have 4 seasons that are just 1 story away from being restored for a full BluRay set!
