One of the strangest I have seen is Love Affair's Rainbow Valley shot I believe for Top Pop 'Top Pop' didn't start until 1970. This is from the earlier Dutch TV show 'Moef Ga Ga', broadcast 3rd April 1968.

A great colour promo for "The Love I Thought I'd Found" (aka "Smashed Blocked") by John's Children:

I'd love to see the 1973 made for Top Of The Pops "promo" of "The Laughing Gnome" by David Bowie again, the promo was stop frame animation, with a Bowie look-a -like and of course, gnomes.

Two goodies, the first from Cream, which is nicely wacky:
and I remember seeing this Troggs' promo on TOTP or maybe a different pop show back in the day, it still looks good, nicely atmospheric.

^^ The Troggs best single!
Hilarious seeing even the mighty Cream succumbing to the lure of the wacky promo. Speaking of wacky, how about the Trems having fun in the snow:
A brief clip of this was used on an xmas(-ish) music compilation called 'Reindeer Rock', shown as part of one of those semi-regular BBC2 archive themed evenings they used to put on in the 1990s. It doesn't necessarily follow that the film was made by the BBC, although it's easy to imagine it being shown on TOTP. There's no visual evidence apart from an abundance of winter as to whether it was shot in the UK or overseas. Good though!

I'm surprised some artists were making promotional films for songs that had been released two years earlier. I can understand making one just after a song had been a hit in the UK but hadn't been released elsewhere, but two years seems like a very long time in the music world of the 1960s, when tastes and trends seemed to change very fast.
About the only exception to this rule are Northern Soul songs, that were often a hit here long after their original American release.

This was made for Swedish TV's 'Popside', and almost certainly filmed in that country.

Here's are two different promos for the same song, "With a Little Help From Friends" (1968) - Joe Cocker and the Grease Band Version 1: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VR0xMR-1z2UThis non lip sync version contains footage of Syd Barrett with Pink Floyd, Traffic & Jimi Hendrix, filmed on 22nd December 1967, at the Grand and National Halls, Kensington Olympia, London, "Christmas on Earth Continued". Along with outtakes from the shelved "A Day in the Life" promo by The Beatles, filmed at Abbey Road Studios on the 10th February 1967. Version 2: www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3LQ-FReO7QA straightforward mimed performance by Joe Cocker and the band filmed at The Marquee Club in London, although it was filmed in colour which is quite unique as all the contemperous TV performances of the song from that year are in monochrome.

Yes that one was definitely used as it features under the end credits of the surviving TOTP '67 edition from December of that year, which has been repeated by BBC Four.

I also seem to remember a promo shown on TOTP for "The Good The Bad and The Ugly" by Hugo Montenegro involving some women dressed up as Indian Squaws or something like that I've always wanted to see this again as haven't seen it since 1968 when it was shown I wonder if it still exists anywhere not sure if it was made by the BBC or not.

It was more than likely to have made on their behalf, even if it was subbed out. Peter Whitehead did a fair few TOTP films 66-67, and Caravel (and Opsis) did films for TOTP 70-74. Now, this was 68.... It's quite possible they could have used stock footage (the Onedin Line """promo""" film in 1972 was simply that, but....) I find it unlikely there'd be a promo filmed for an instrumental by the record company.

The wonderful MOVE being tremendously hip and cool and moody naughty lads in the 'Grass Grow' promo, then 2 weeks later they've gone technicolour and loving in the 'Flowers in the rain' clip. Gotta love them and the amazing RAGE from Australia. A real source of many a lost clip. youtu.be/Hl_VfGXf6kQyoutu.be/iQOc_hgpyPE
