The Doctor Who Missing Episodes Podcast - Special Edition - A Conversation With Film Collectors linktr.ee/missingeps_podSince private collector Terry Burnett returned two episodes in 2011 and the announcement in 2013 of nine episodes found in Nigeria, to date, no further missing episodes have been returned, even though episodes are known to exist in private hands. So, as they’re the most viable option for further Doctor Who missing episode returns in the future, it’s time to talk film collectors. TV producer and missing episodes expert Paul Vanezis, along with well-connected and established film collectors John Clancy and John Franklin join Tim for a frank and colourful discussion on the hobby of film collecting and the film collecting community. What is film collecting? Why do people collect film? Is there much interest in TV on film and how much of it is about? How did material make its way from copyright holders into collections? What is the size and state of film collecting today as a hobby? What are attitudes like about secrecy? Are film collectors deliberately hoarding missing episodes? The truth is probably more complicated than you think… We learn that many collections are tragically ending up in landfill on a regular basis, so what can be done about that? One solution, being worked on by the panel, is to hold a film collectors’ event and we get to learn all about October’s “Film is Fabulous” and what that might reveal… Superb episode - great work Tim, Paul V, John Clancy & John Franklin. This is a must listen for anyone who comes to this website to really appreciate the collectors point of view before posting. Really good to hear about all the initiatives going on to educate and protect the collections that are out there. Top work gents! youtu.be/H6rYTln3roA?si=dKUwfLHSss7YVm0S

I get a feeling that Paul wanted to talk about which of the 6 missing episodes that he and Philip Morris said that were in private collection where which episodes (and confirming or denying the BritBox leak), but ended up not doing that due to privacy reasons and NDA's. I'd wish Philip himself was in the podcast.

Fascinating listen. Resonates a lot with what we know, have heard especially trying to help these Collectors make arrangements with their collections, especially after this Aussie guys family dumped so much potential Gold. The event sounds interesting as does the new found items which Paul V says does not include DR WHO but he has a gift for the way he phrases things.

I'd wish Philip himself was in the podcast. I couldn't disagree harder. Paul clearly does not want to discuss these or he would of put the numerous rumours on this site to bed. It's a shame throughout listening you have missed the fundamental point which is these collectors are to be cherished and applauded and that things take time and there may be things outside of our control and thought that cause delays. If Paul wants us to know about them he would say so here for all to see. Please stop with the britbox rumour it has been debunked for you multiple times by people well in the know but you seem very persistent

Just jaw-dropping to hear of films still being destroyed on a daily basis, that film collections from those passing away are still being skipped. What, I wonder has been lost since COVID has sadly taken so many of these elderly collectors from the film collecting community?... The Avengers? Doctor Who? Dad's Army? etc. Is there a record of what has been lost so far? Also tantalising suggestions that one collector alone could have a collection of over 10,000 films. Great to hear of the film collectors convention end of Oct, though, Film is Fabulous. Very promising. Thanks to all for conceieving of it and organising it - ahead of it happening. An invaluable podcast, thank you so much, Tim, and to those who took part in it - Christmas Day's come early! Link to the Film is Fabulous event - www.bfcc.biz/next.html

It was a good podcast.
Sadly it left me with belief that it's not the classic film collectors that are hoarding tv. But perhaps younger people in fandom.
My belief is these older film collectors are much more generous than those who kiss their feet and then keep shows privately.
Many of us want someone to keep the memories of our collections going. But we need a next generation with a heart to give forward also Unfortunately not all are that way.

A message from Tim from Twitter. Still leaves the PM/Gatiss private screening of "fragments of Power" unaccounted for. Mark has never come forward to deny it, interestingly.

Moving back to the podcast chat, loved hearing from both Johns. Tim that was brilliant as always, one of the few podcasts I listen to. Looking forward to the next episode.

I believe the rumours of a Power screening emerged from the filming of special scenes for Victory of the Daleks. From a 2014 Q&A with Paul Vanezis: Can't see how a word of this relates to Phil Morris giving Mark Gatiss a private showing of fragments of POTD. Think you're jumping on Tim's bandwagon of how rumours spread out of hand. But your theory has got completely out of hand, from the off, Brandon. Anyway, let's wait and see what Phil reveals from his findings, he has recently promised that the list will go down - "soon".
