Then go to the transdiffusion website. You can hardly expect someone to spend an evening copying tapes to that format without some incentive, or even the word 'please'.

Hear, hear. This type of human interaction without using common courtesy is becoming more and more prevalent in youth today. In my day it would have earned a kick up the arse...

Perhaps it's changing social patterns. With fragmented families, social skills are changing.
Even then, the worst of all this is that these people somehow expect a few lines and five seconds of typing son the web/forum will solve a problem
e.g. stupid theories like ('has anyone thought that all the missing BBC films are under the M1?')
- never mind the conjecture - what do they think is going to happen? A trained team of BBC specialists will read the post ('my goodness what a great idea, never thought of that!'), the army will be moblised with Metal Detectors and the hunt will begin ?!?
or crap along the lines of
'has anyone ever built an electron microscope that can read between the lines of old tapes and recover previous recordings' etc.
and on it goes........

Perhaps it's changing social patterns. With fragmented families, social skills are changing. With molly-coddling, political correctness and a lack of discipline and/or respect for others - "...social skills are changing." I come from a fragmented family (as does my daughter). We have both turned out fine and appreciate the value of good manners and have the ability to empathise with others. Constant mollycoddling and lack of discipline only serves to reinforce to some that the world does, indeed, revolve around them...

so do i, as a kid who's mother died when i was 3, and having an older brother and sister.
I was still brought up to respect my elders, hold doors open for other people, and please and thank you's etc.
i am now 36, never "ever" broken the law, don't drink, don't smoke, don't take no drugs (Barely even a headache tablet, unless absolutely desparing)
There are still sone pillocks on this earth, who go through life withought a care in this world, who time will catch up with them.
but then again, the odd forgotten please or thank you doesn't matter, from the ones who actually take the effort to better themselves but the action to ask for help from others, is a good thing.
: )

I didn't elaborate on the 'fragmented family' but meant that this is far more common these days and it might be having an effect? The better point made by Bevan is that keeping kids like pampered pets leads to lack of consideration.
A whole generation of 'Me firsts' might be on the way.......

Fair enough Andy. And the "me first"s are already among us.
Cellphones, Internet, Playstation/Xbox games, "interactive" TV have all contributed over the years to foster a market for instant gratification, which has in turn led our "me first" consumers (people and businesses) to lean toward a selfish viewpoint.
As an example of the above, I spent many years working as a retailer of electronic goods. Customers were given my card listing my contact numbers (for times of real emergencies). This is usual practice for most retail outlets but should not result in the salesperson fielding cellphone calls at two o'clock in the morning from rat-arsed, pub-going customers (who want to play with their new cellphone but can't be bothered reading their manuals).
I also had a complaint laid against me once (the complaint was later dismissed by my employer). A customer rang me early one morning demanding I help him program his phone and deliver a new battery. My answer? "F*ck off - it's Christmas Day!"
We now live in a selfish world where the golden rule is no longer: "Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself" but; "Whoever has the gold makes the rules". This would seem to epitomise the selfish nature of today's world. I shudder to think what tomorrow may look like...
I feel for this young kid who started this thread as he/she probably only meant to ask for help in the only way he/she knew how. The lack of manners may indicate that he/she may simply not know any better. However, I am ready and willing to correct the situation if need be...
