Hi, it's the student here that started this thread. i'm sorry I forgot to say please. this is because i was thinking about what other coursework i need to do as I am leaving school in May & I desperately need these viddies (videos). Thanx for looking (if you are looking). i think looking through all these tapes will do you some good reminding as at one time, we were one of the countries that produced some of the programmes that became world-wide successes! I mean, how many start-ups, closedowns with the national anthem or pre-programme ITV idents do you see today? So, come on dig through all those old videotapes & post them to: aidan_lunn@hotmail.co.uk. If you don't know how to dowload videos onto a computer it comes in simple steps: 1) copy them to DVD (you will need a DVD recorder to do this) 2) put them into your computer's diasc tray (you will not need a DVD drive, just the tray & a decent amount of computer memory) 3) save to your computer's hard drive 4) post them to me at the above address.

By the way, post them in WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER ONLY! other formats will NOT be accepted. Nothing personal, just that MPEG (which is the kind of file WMP uses) is the easiest to copy onto DVD for me to play them out for my project at school. & by the way, that is disc not diasc!

Yorkshire student, either you are very naive or are winding us up. If the former, you are probably about to discover that part of project work is you do the research, not other people. You've been given good links from people on here. Use them properly.

If you don't know how to dowload videos onto a computer it comes in simple steps: Not only are you asking for the moon on a stick and doing it in a very rude way, you're a patronising little muppet as well. I have loads of startups on tape and DVD, and I know how to capture them and save them to any format you care to name. However, there's no way I feel inclined to do any of this for you, and I sense that most other people here who could help you feel the same way. As Andy says, you have been given a load of links with material that you will find invaluable. Use them.

I desperately need these viddies (videos). What's the point of abbreviating something if the abbreviation is longer than the original word and you feel the need to explain the abbreviation anyway?

"you're a patronising little muppet as well"
(Laughs) - was a very funny comment too. I once incurred the wrath of 'Transdiffusion' by daring to declare I was unimpressed by their name. 'KIF' was at pains to point out the origin to me, but I must admit, it still sounds like some Soho boutique of ill repute.

Yorkshire student, either you are very naive or are winding us up. I sense a bit of a wind up here, I mean how many GCSE students have a knowledge and appreciation of an ITV start up ? If 'Yorkshire' has Googled his way to here then he must have passed TV Ark / Transdiffussion on the way....

5 points to make here: 1) "viddies" is a nickname NOT an abbreviation. 2) I have learning disailities (asperger's syndrome), which makes some sufferers prone to getting interested in things that other people of any age group aren't interested in. 3) I have done research on these things but I don't actually have any videos. 4) if i copy these things off the websites you suggest then I could get into legal trouble as their servers can detect when someone is trying to convert their real Video .ram filmes to MPEG or any other video format. so i am not prepeared to get into a legal battle, which is what they did to someone who copied stuff off their website & sold the prated DVD's on eBay (which is actually how you say it). 5) The examiners these days might give you a better mark if you choose something that everyone else in your age group hasn't chosen.
Anyway, you lot, you go on about me being rude? How can you tell me off for being rude if you call me things like "patronising little muppet". I'm not usually this cheeky, but when I am offended, i take action!

I would suggest that the best way to avoid being called a "patronising little muppet" would be to cease acting like one. No one likes being patronised by someone young enough to be our children on things many of us were doing long before they were born...

5 points to make here: 1) "viddies" is a nickname NOT an abbreviation. OK, it's a diminutive form. I know plenty of people with Asperger's Syndrome, thanks, so I have a working knowledge of what's involved. Incidentally, I don't have Asperger's Syndrome. I'm just an anorak. If you'd come in here and said "I'm interested in startups, too young to have seen any at the time and don't have any on video. Does anybody have any they could send me? Thanks in advance." I suspect you'd have had at least 1 offer of help. A legal battle with who? The sites don't own the copyright in the material, the broadcasters do. However, the copyright laws have a provision called 'fair use', which allows people to use illustrative examples in educational projects free, without having to get clearance. The trouble starts when people try selling things on eBay. And once you've downloaded something, I doubt that TV Ark or whoever can tell what you're doing with it, format-wise. The worst that could happen is that the quality probably won't be up to much, after re-encoding a low quality file to another format. Yes, fair enough. Later on in life, you can't do a PhD on a topic that has been covered before. Which led, in one example, to someone doing a thesis on convex surfaces in Daniel Deronda. God, we're scared. The point is that we're quite nice until someone takes the pee. Which you were, making demands and being a bit snotty. A lot of this can be put down to your Asperger's, obviously.

To summarise - everything you need is online already, and it's perfectly legal for you to borrow the files for your presentation, as long as you acknowledge the source fully. Just put "thanks to TV Ark, Transdiffusion, etc". at the end.

They'll set Redvers Kyle on you. And yes, you have a point about the name. Remember the sex change machine in Look Around You? Incidentally, Andy, any chance that you could email me off-list? You mentioned something a while back that I'd like to ask you about. mail@louisbarfe.com Cheers, L
