I agree that this poll is reminding me also of the quality and yet emptiness of season 4.
I too used to focus on season 5 also, however we are now very fortunate that season 5 is looking very strong.
Hopefully some of that determination will help season 4.

For a long time I used to be all about Evil. And it's hard not to, given how awesome Episode 2 is in direction and music. Even jumping into the story only helps with the mystery: "What am I to do with the body?" asks Waterfield. Dudley's stealing the bass line for the theme for the incidentals is brilliant, and it all pulls together nicely at the end. How do you beat that?
But as good as Evil is, it loses focus in the middle -- for which I blame the odd episode length. If Evil had been a 6-parter it'd be really tough, I think.
But Power is just as amazing. The Dalek chanting "I AM YOUR SER-VANT!" is absolutely chilling and the way the subplots intertwine, it moves along and never lets up, with only the bit about the message board approaching a misstep.
Power first, then Evil.

Power first, then Evil. Same for me. I think the reason, for me at least, is that you actually get to see the Daleks do what the Daleks are suppose to do, Exterminate. On a mass level. In a lot of Daleks stories have the Daleks being built up as a big threat only for the Doctor to come in and save the day, so we never actually get to see them as the threat the are portrayed to be,(once again, in my opinion). That's not to say they're bad, it's just that it can get repetitive and predictable at times. (I'm looking at you Journey's End or really any Dalek story from New who outside of Dalek and Asylum). Power is one of the few times we are told of their power and then get to witness it.

Power first, then Evil. You're making me wish I'd gone for Power rather than Evil and perhaps I was swayed by being able to see Evil ep 2. Of the numerous dalek stories since these two only Genesis and Dalek get anywhere close to the suspense of their 1960s forebears - but not that close.

But as good as Evil is, it loses focus in the middle -- for which I blame the odd episode length. Im curious why you believe Evil loses focus in the middle? Have you seen it? I havent either, but my memory seems to recall that someone who saw it thought Evil 2 was one of the WEAKER of the episodes. While i agree with you that Evil 2 is awesome, if the above is true, then the story perhaps is better than we believe. I will agree with you that one might get that impression because the fight scenes between Jamie and Kemble in the middle, while exciting in video, could come across empty in audio. I personally dont know which one is better. I understand I am more biased toward evil because the audio I had of evil was clear and up to recently i never heard a good audio or reconstruction of power to compare. Another bias might be is because Terrence Dicks called Evil their greatest adventure (which could have also formed my opinion.) but hopefully both show up, so we can watch them not caring which is better because we have them both Either way.. two amazing dalek stories.

Im curious why you believe Evil loses focus in the middle? I haven't seen the original, of course, so if it turns up I'll gladly be wrong if the full visuals make up for it, but watching the LC recon I thought things dragged some during episodes 4 & 5.

This one was a difficult one for me. With all its flaws, I prefer the 10th Planet, just a tragic ending for the 1st Doctor. I really like the 1st Doctor and it was sad to see him go. If it was just purely 2nd Doctor without a doubt my favorite 4th Season is The Macra Terror. Even with stills its an engrossing story. I also feel this is the story where Troughton becomes the 2nd Doctor in terms of having a command of the character and his interaction with the other characters. It feels he is the most comfortable performing the character starting with this serial. BTW The Planet Vulcan is not purely a Star Trek invention, in astrology the true ruler of the astrology sign Virgo is the Lost Planet of Vulcan, which is suppose to be between Mercury and the Sun. nineplanets.org/hypo.htmlLF

It took a very long time but I have finally decided on the Highlanders. I just love the way Patrick Troughton portrayed the Doctor in it. Being Doktor von Wer, dressing up in different outfits and not to mention the "Do you suffer from headaches" bit in episode 2. (Plus I love the Recorder) It is such a shame that we haven't got his most commical moments bar a couple of episodes from the Underwater Menace. They only offer a snapshot of what he was like during his early episodes. I would love to see the whole picture.

Wow very hard, but, by what I have "Seen" (thanks to recons), I really enjoyed Evil of the Daleks - Power was very good as well - but there was something gloriously chilling about the child-like Daleks!
Cheers MJ

I relented and went with 034 'There is no such thing as 034...!' OMG, I've watched that video a dozen times and only just now caught the ref. Well played!

I had to love Evil of The Daleks due to the fact that it was the first Doctor Who story that I have any memories of from 1967 and yes I really am that old!

Three stories rise above the rest for me here - The Power of the Daleks, The Macra Terror, and The Evil of the Daleks. I took Power because of how diabolical the Daleks are. "I am your servant!" Just awesome. But a lot of good stuff this season too.

Evil takes time to get going to a brilliant climax, fury, well its Fury lol. Fury will rate so much better if found ! And possibly be No1 with me once watched properly. Oh the agonies of this season, which to choose lol.

As a lucky enough viewer to have vague memories of Fury From The Deep I can't wait to see the ending to one of the episodes with Victoria disappearing into the foam with Robson while The Doctor watches from the side! What a fantastic story too! Well we can hope can't we...
