It's that time again guys! I love all of these stories so I honestly don't know what to pick. But I'm calling Power or Evil will take top billing because, well duh. Happy voting! I've been looking forward to the Season 4 poll for a long time! Thanks for keeping them going! I went for Power of the Daleks in the end. Classic. No problem Will! I'm always curious to see what stories are people's favourites. I've been waiting years for a group like this, I can relate to all my friends in everyday except DW, especially missing eps. So I swoon over stuff like this

I chose Faceless Ones - based on whenever i listen to the audio, always enjoy, always pay attention, and love the interplay with pauline collins. and think its a cracking idea actually!!

Season 4 had a great variety. You had both hartnell and troughton, the first regeneration, the first cyberman story ( hartnells only cyberman story), moonbase, two classic dalek stories, and several other great stories.

Not one of those stories is complete. Not one.

Season four was decimated by the archive purge so it's hard to tell without watching them in their entirety. Who would have thought EOTW was so brilliant?!
If I had to pick, based on recons, I'd follow the consensus and say 'Power'. I'd put Smugglers a close second though,

Poor old "The Highlanders", eh? It's sitting on zero votes (although one member claims to have voted for it). If I'd known that I would have voted for it: the most atypical Troughton and funny as hell (in parts) to boot.
"The Power of the Daleks" won out though. Yes, obvious it may be, but that's because it's near note perfect in Plotting, Pacing and Performance: the three "P"s.

What a line-up eh? I went for Evil but wish this vote could have been done like Eurovision so that most of them could get something. As Simon said (!) none of these stories are complete which makes it a tad difficult to judge the visual impact. I would love to re-take the vote if (when?) these stories are recovered...

Power is absolutely sensational on audio. The scene where the Dalek talks over the Doctor as he describes their evil and ability to destroy is stunning! If the visual element was there, who knows where it would be in the pantheon of Dalek stories? Would it usurp Genesis, which to me runs out of steam after the initial introduction of Davros and becomes a political runaround. But that may just be due to over familiarity, as I found Genesis thrilling as a child. The audio of Power also has the advantage in that it is crystal clear, as if it were taken directly from the video tapes. If this serial has been found as it has been continually rumoured to this day, then I can understand the care and meticulous restoration that it would require so as to present it to the world as the shining jewel that it so obviously is.

Not one of those stories is complete. Not one. This used to give me real problems, but I came to terms with the unsympathetic nature of the universe and moved on. At least Web came back

It certainly isn't the nadir of Historicals as it has usually been described and has a lot of business going on it . Don't ask me what it's about though! Visually I'm sure it would be interesting to watch with lots of primitive sets and dark, brooding lighting. After the surprise of EOTW being an atypical, entertaining serial, none of the reputedly lesser serials of Troughton's tenure may be what they seem.

Coincidentally I was watching The War Games over the last few days and the scene where James McCrimmon returns to his time slot brings us tantalisingly close to The Highlanders itself - same era of production and all that. We've had to make do with the Target novelisation and the stills reconstruction in Missing Stories which at least hinted at a gritty, atmospheric story. But few stories could compete with Power or Evil. And the Faceless Ones was great too. So was Moonbase, and Macra Terror... I don't think that a low score for The Highlanders is necessarily a poor judgement by us fans.

Until recently The Moonbase used to be written off as a weak story, no thanks to a bad write-up in The Discontinuity Guide. If there's one story that's crying out for padding, then it's The Moonbase! The superb animation, although finally completing the story in one form or another finds the serial thin and wanting of further narrative. I really don't think that even if the films were found that this would change my view. The story is resolved and ends too quickly in my opinion. I am curious where you would put the extra scenes? If i remember correctly, the dr uses the graviatron to raise the cyberman off the moon so that they're floating in space. Kind of a simple ending, but they do add a little extra by having trouble lowering the gravitatron to reach the moon's surface.

I would have liked some more tension at the end - were there any stray Cybermen left in the Moonbase even though the others had been lifted into space, to further pursue the operatives who worked there? Did any Cybermen manage to hold on and terrorise the staff once the Gravitron has been returned to normal?

I think Highlanders suffers because many will feel they will never get to see any of it and unlike the more popular stories from this season, it has not been extensively woven into Classic episode folklore or referenced in rebooted Doctor Who of more recent years. Underwater Menace Ep2 shows Jamie as he first appeared in Highlanders so it's a shame we're not going to see that (officially) in UM for some time yet. I must admit, the focus of my missing episodes fascination for very many years was on Season 5 (and still is, largely) but there are potentially many overlooked gems of stories in season 4 so this is a great poll and thread for reminding me of that.
