The BBCs socially aware, PC mad obsession must have made it obvious, even to them, that there is no place for it in this show, as it has been recently. Now let's not go down that path. People say that if you bring Hitler and the Nazi's into a conversation, you've lost your argument. The modern equivalent of that is the misuse of the word socially aware. I'd like to ban the word socially aware if I could because how you're using it and how many others use it doesn't reflect the true meaning of the word. As for the BBC being PC, well, in a modern society you need to reflect all parts of it and it is exactly the BBC's job to do that. You can call it PC if you like. I think it can also be described as common sense. Paul Well said.

I heard the telerecording equipment failed during the original performance, which was once of the reasons for the second performance, unless that's an urban myth. Very much a myth - you can see it billed in the Radio Times: genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/page/9569ae729931431f81df7281369ed78eIt's interesting on this new release to finally be able to see Michael Barry's introduction to the second performance, which I'd not seen before. I thought it might be, along with the story of the Quatermass Experiment telerecordings being halted by a technician's strike.

I think Nicky presented Channel 4's American Football coverage for a few years.

I think it was mentioned elsewhere that some episodes of Callan survived on 405 line tapes for years, until they were transferred to a more modern format & the original taped junked rather than being donated to the BFI.

I'm pleased to hear about this, as even the DVDs were mastered from down the line copies.

I'm not sure when the BBC started to use 1" tape, but were certainly using 2" to make Dr Who with until 1983.

OK, I've mostly heard about 71 edits from Doctor Who Magazine features on the BBC archive holdings.

Did the Dr Who clocks normally have the serial code on? I'm mentioning this because sometimes the titles were only decided on late in the day, with Claws of Axos replacing The Vampire From Space when the opening titles & Radio Times listings has already been created using that name. Not all of them had the serial code on. However not all of them have the serial title on either. The surviving VT Clock for the Ambassadors of Death episode 1 just has 'Serial CCC' chalked on. The project number is 2349 7010, where the 23 = drama serial as Doctor Who was/is a drama serial not a drama series. OK I see, the BBC seemed to have some codes for various things, with 71 onwards for VT edits & 91 for programmes edited on film from what I remember.

Yes. WNED in Buffalo had more viewers across Lake Ontario than it did in New York State. Well Buffalo is not exactly a large US city but its not a small one either. It would have had many viewers in the USA as well. But its signal did compete with TV Ontario so viewers in that part of either southern Ontario or upstate New York would have had the opportunity to see the majority of the Jon Pertwee era between the two broadcasters. The only ones that would not have been available would have been "Spearhead form Space", "Carnival of Monsters", "Frontier in Space", "Planet of the Daleks" and of course "Invasion of the Dinosaurs". A pity the BBC wiped some of the season 10 and 11 episodes so soon after transmission when they were starting to get some colour sales to the USA and Canada They seemed a bit hasty to do so. especially as they wouldn't have to rely on Australia getting round to starting colour transmissions.

I remember Professor Poopsnagle being shown in the UK on a bank holiday in the late 1980s. Anglia, probably. But those were abridged TV movie versions. I never caught the first two parts, but now, after 30 years, perhaps I finally will! Yes I thought it might have been edited down from separate episodes.

When you tell the general public you have autism, the plebs assume you are either Sheldon Cooper or Rain Main. Yes I find that a problem, especially a former boss who thought I would have superhuman abilities!

Personally I’m going to go with the ‘alien’ theory to explain the character’s social awkwardness rather than mental infirmity. Regardless, such an innocuous, simple and wonderfully inventive series really shouldn’t be over analysed. Oh and to answer “could a programme like Mr Bean be made now?”: absolutely not. Mr Bean is funny…Brittas Empire is another that may fall into that category now. I'm high functioning autism myself, so I can relate to these characters, Data from star trek as well. Sometimes when I try to be funny I do go over the top, so thankfully my wife will cut me short and say, "You're acting like Gordon Brittas, again." Oh, dear!? I'm in a similar situation, I often relate to the characters in the Big Bang Theory for the same reasons. My parents went on a cruise where one of the passengers kept trying to micromanage the activities on board & got the nickname Mr Brittas by my parents.
