I have heard from Sarah from TPTV who are happy to collect. She is not however a member of the board, and neither am I, although I have applied for membership which hasn't been granted. It would be typical if they were disposed of before they could be got to safety. Does anyone have an account there and would they be willing to either post the above or send him an email? Alternatively PM me and I will pass on the message from Sarah. I am happy to contact them directly if someone can provide contact details and pass on TPTVs interest. Lets get these rescued! Great work Boy Wonder đź‘Ť

Having visited Singapore several times in the 1990's, I can tell you its a small city state, not a very big place at all (compared to say Hong Kong for example). Sadly as the majority of the population is of Chinese or Malay decent. While English is widely used there Chinese and other local languages are also very prevalent. The English speaking community there is not that large over all. I looked in the old quarter and open air bazars as well as going into small shops looking for film prints back then and found no place selling old films. Its possible some were spirited away across the cause way into Johor Bahru, Malaysia where SBC's Signal could be clearly received but alas the English speaking community is very small, in fact smaller than in Singapore That’s useful - although sad - information.

OT & a bit pointless & I know I’ve said this before, but I would really like to see The Savages again. I’ve no reason to suspect that it survives, but it is top of my missing Hartnell list for recovery. If you could wish a Hartnell back then that’s the one for me. According to 'Wiped', the last known broadcast of The Savages was Singapore (along with Galaxy 4, Myth Makers, Massacre, Toymaker, Smugglers, Tenth Planet and Power). Other stories broadcast in Singapore were 'bicycled' on. On the basis of 'place of final transmission' theory (as per Enemy and Web in Nigeria) is it too much to hope that some of these episodes may still be there in private hands? Such a person would have been well-heeled to afford a film projector in those days. However, as discussed elsewhere on this thread, episodes seem to survive in ones or twos on the basis that it would be difficult for someone to 'liberate' any more without being spotted (although it's tempting to imagine an avid collector making off with a van-load of salvaged tapes ). Same applies to Zambia (Underwater Menace, Moonbase, Macra, Faceless Ones, Ice Warriors, Space Pirates). Unfortunately, so far I've been unable to locate any film-collector clubs in Singapore, Lusaka or Kitwe . You get 100% for asking the right question. MEs have escaped destruction where 16mm film collecting is an established hobby. People are only gonna “liberate” things like that if they, or someone they know, is interested.

TPTV always seem interested in archive material - strange that! - but, as I’ve pointed out before, most archive material has a copyright holder, even if that copyright holder didn’t give a Rhett Butler about the material in the past.
They generally reply to emails TheTalkingPicturesTVTeam@talkingpicturestv.co.uk

There are a lot of unknowns and I’m not convinced we’ve had the complete story. Reminds me of Bilbo and the Ring!

As a matter of interest, have any figures been released (or is there a reliable ballpark figure) of how much these animations cost to produce, whether it be a full 6-parter (Power etc) or 4-parter (Macra) or singleton (WOF3)? Similarly, is there any indication of how profitable each of these animations have been? I think that’s commercial in confidence.

The episode being shown on Sunday 12th September @ 12:30 on TPTV is a missing episode called Shropshire Lass from series 2 episode 3, originally broadcasted on 23rd April 1958. TVBrain has: 23.04.1958 The Shropshire Lass Holding = R1, Source = LiveR1. And I can never remember what that means. TPTV often use “missing” - with quotes - and I’m sometimes unsure exactly what they mean. To me something that’s safely in an archive isn’t missing although it may be extremely difficult to actually view. How many of their “missing” programmes were actually missing?

Fair enough. I suppose MP really was a case of wishful thinking back then, then. Thanks for the info. Wishful up to a point. There were serious discussions internally about it back then. But it’s neither here or there if there’s nothing to show for it currently. The thing with MP is that it was very widely sold abroad and, consequently, a reasonable number of prints were struck. However - looks round for Jon Preddle - I think it stopped being offered to foreign broadcasters fairly early.

Has PV or whoever physically verified or seen unambiguous proof that what’s claimed actually exists? Some years ago PV took a trip “oop north” iirc to see a Dr Who print. He was sceptical but went anyway. It turned out to be Dr Who - an episode of the Romans! Actually, I wasn't sceptical. I asked for some evidence that would make a trip worthwhile, which was sent to me, followed by a phone call. The location was in fact 'down south but it was indeed the episode 'Conspiracy. Paul I was only 180 degrees out - I can live with that 👍

Some interesting information.
Thinking it through it’s most likely to be where troops were garrisoned abroad and English wasn’t the first language.

In the new DWM,Jeremy Bentham is reported as keeping an eye on prints sent to the Royal Navy. How feasible is it that organisations such as the armed forces would have kept old 16mm film prints of B/W episodes...of any sort?Any evidence that film prints of any series has been recovered this way? Hello Sailor! A few years ago there was a possibility that DW had been shown to US forces in the Far East but nothing came of it. I don’t think there’s any reason why DW shouldn’t have been shown to the senior service but where and when? We pulled out of east of Suez in 1967 although Hong Kong was British until 1997 and we still have a presence on Cyprus. The forces tended to have their own newspapers, etc so if, for example, things were shown in Cyprus or Hong Kong there should be a record. Additionally, for those on things like Facebook there are probably pages where ex service personnel can be found. The question is worth asking imho.

I am aware that last post looks a little entitled. Please understand it comes from a place of love. I just feel this new animation process is a huge jump back not a leap forward. I haven’t seen it but perhaps it’s something that can be fine tuned?

OK, let’s take it a step further.
I’m assuming that the two Hartnells exist and have been verified as not being in the archive and came from the Australian returns.
As Airlock came from that source it must have been on the top of the pile when it was “acquired”. It’s possible that cans from a particular story could’ve been together so there could be another episode of Galaxy 4.

This is an edited list of those stories which have one or more episodes missing:
Galaxy Four The Myth Makers The Smugglers The Tenth Planet The Power of the Daleks The Underwater Menace The Moonbase The Faceless Ones The Evil of the Daleks The Abominable Snowmen The Ice Warriors The Web of Fear The Invasion The Space Pirates
If there are two Hartnell MEs out there that were “acquired” from this batch then they’re from:
Galaxy Four The Myth Makers The Smugglers The Tenth Planet
