just a mention about Mike Mansfield - he seemed to be the pop guru at Southern TV, he did the 'Ladybirds' series about girl singers.... ... and also the pop group long special 'A Tale of Two Rivers' shot in Paris and London from Southern's production VTR kitted out boat. Being a VTR it probably does not exist anymore, but a filmed sequence with Cathy Mcgowan and Dave Clark on a speed boat in the Thames does appear to have survived. That reminds me I have a good quality domestic open-reel audio recording of Lulu's appearance on the 'Two Rivers' series. Judging from a slip of paper in the tape box, it seems that whoever recorded it was a fan of hers, capturing several tv appearances around that time, including a performance of 'To Sir With Love on The Golden Shot 30/12/67 (not mentioned on the attached list).
Anyway not wanting to hi-jack William's thread, back to the plot and Ketty Lester....

Did anyone notice that in this clip, already posted up-thread, the commentator announces they are switching from colour to black & white (at around 4m45s) due to poor light...!

Worth keeping an eye on the complete shows uploaded to this channel as a few of them contain rare, albeit mimed, performances from UK artists. This edition includes David McWilliams (the excellent 'We can get there by candlelight' plus 'Days Of..') and also Madeline Bell performing tracks from her superb LP 'Doin' Things' (actually Madeline is american of course but the bulk of her work was UK-based)
This next one includes some Sandie Shaw performances I've not seen before:

Wonderful stuff! I've just sent the links to Steve Ellis. I think this is the only period interview (such as it is) I've ever seen with Love Affair.
Great that you've sent the links to Steve, Peter. I'd be amazed if he remembers any of it, but do let us know if you get any feedback from him. I've always thought 'One Road' was a very underrated single.

Just stumbled across a YT channel from the archive holders of Austria's 'Spotlight' tv pop show. Some fun stuff on here filmed in London, including plenty of regulation late 60s 'horsing around' for the camera.
Here are Love Affair performing the excellent One Road, quite literally on, er, one road:
There is also a slightly awkward interview with the band at Madam Tussaud's:
and more 1969 clips including a great one of obscure UK band Strawberry Jam performing their song 'Per-son-al-ly'

The first generation colour TVs never had rotary tuners or a line switcher, you pushed the channel button and it would change the channel to whatever ever line standard or aerial frequency it had been set to, so customers were unaware of the stress and goings-on in the back of the set to make a complete line change. Although there was an effort by manufacturers to make the early UK colour sets as simple for customers as possible, using tuners with pushbuttons which could be preset to either line standard, there were a couple of exceptions. Below are the dual standard Baird M701 and KB CK400 which used rotary tuners for both VHF and UHF, as per many of the b&w dual standard sets of the time. Wow! Full marks to the set designers and creative bods on this very late Manfred Mann performance...

It certainly looks like one of those distinctive STC microphones used on TOTP in the footage. Interesting to try and work out what song the Small Faces might be performing. Any guesses? 'Itchycoo Park' was usually the one that prompted an outbreak of video effects from tv producers.

That's the first time I've heard the song 'Budgie'and on the first listen I think it could have been a hit single maybe it was an album track it's a good song. I love it! It's a bit quirky, but still commercial. Presumably if they were promoting it on tv it was an intended single, although it doesn't appear to have been issued as such. It's not an LP track either. I'm only aware of it as it was included on a double CD set of Mike D'Abo era Manfred Mann recordings some years ago. Unfortunately the CD notes (such as they were) gave no clue as to where it came from, or even a year. Fantastic to see that colour performance from 'Once More With Felix' - that was a real surprise. It seems the audio has been replaced with a stereo version as the original soundtrack to the performance is damaged, according to the uploader's notes.
Regarding the Late Night Line Up segment, wouldn't it be interesting to know whether the extract from 'Whole Scene Going' shown to the guests was being played back from videotape or from a telerecording...

It's intriguing that this clip (to the best of my knowledge) hasn't surfaced before- at least it's entirely new to me and I've not seen it in any TOTP compilations or retrospectives- ever!
I wonder therefore if it doesn't exist in the BBC archives but survives as an insert in an overseas show- or is it a shade too early for that? We know that practice was in place a couple of years later, hence the survival of King Crimson's 1970 TOTP appearance with 'Cat Food' as part of Hits A-Go-Go...

Nice finds Andrew, especially 1.1.70! Wow! I notice there's no music bed under Savile's links so this New Year Special must just pre-date the style of presentation (with psychedelic background effects) that can be seen in the existing Jan 1970 telerecordings. Maybe that (and the new title sequence) came in with first regular show the following week.
Pretty decent quality for a domestic recording. Out of interest how did you come across the tapes?

I'm sure I've seen the Pan's People 'Jimmy Mack' performance used in a clips show. In fact there is a whole 22 seconds of it to enjoy on YT...

Fantastic piece of work! Those colour photos are stunning. I've always considered 1970 to be a peak year for TOTP in terms of the way it looked and the sheer variety of acts featured.
Are any of those photos in your book Peter? (which I currently have on order by the way!)
