Please enlighten us: 1) What evidence has Phil provided (that you are aware of) that the Jos Station Manager took WOF3 because he’d already been approached by someone within whom Phil had trusted, and this simply isn’t Phil's interpretation of this guy’s actions & subsequent words? 2) You say that Phil “… has given us updates as to tracing the episode …” Please give us some specifics which provide further evidence, or at least lend further weight, to the fact that’s Phil’s theory is correct. I’m intrigued! Thanks The evidence is enough from Phil's testimony as a man who's put his boots on the ground, seen and experienced all this first hand. What moire evidence do you need, from a man who's given us EOTW and WOF for cripes sake?! Don't you trust his word? Do you even trust yourself, Andy?? Is that it? I was rather hoping you would back up your assertions in a reasoned & mature manner with some specifics ...

You don't think the scenario that the Jos station manager destroyed the tape to hide the evidence of his crime is a satisfactory alternative? If so, you should try telling that to the likes of Richard M & Paul V, both of whom are on record as stating that they believe this to be the most likely scenario. Personally, I believe Phil's interpretation of the manager's actions & subsequent words are incorrect, and the most likely scenario is that Phil drew attention to these tapes by moving them to a secure area, which piqued his curiosity ... It may yet be in private hands (he may have proactively found himself a buyer or may have subsequently been contacted by someone in the know), but I'm now in the camp who believes that it was most likely destroyed. No I don't see that as a likely scenario whatsoever. As an X-File conspiracy theory, yes. Philip Morris was there in-person, boots-on-the-ground, while we were at our keyboards, theorising. He since made a statement in front of many witnesses at a Doctor Who event as to what happened - that he was betrayed by a member of his team - the story of which which went online shortly after. He has not deviated from this story since, and has given us updates as to tracing the episode. If anything, it has given us an insight into the shady side of collecting - not just films - but the lengths some crooks will go to acquire something not theirs & the fact you can trust very few people. There was no tape involved, only film, although I did recall that the something else taken along with the 16mm WOF3 was a tape, and there are indeed tapes among PM's photo of the 12 film cans he took. I feel like we're just re-treading well trodden ground for no reason again. Just because someone doesn't think one particular thing happened (based on lack of evidence) doesn't mean they have a specific alternative in mind. Looking at it rationally, the only reasonable answer with the info we have is: "We don't know". We can offer an idea - PM was good enough to offer his. "We don't know" is more a case of treading old ground. Point is, no one ever has offered a satisfactory alternative explination, which is why, so far, I'm sticking to PM's version. We know of one orphan episode that is 'at large' in England right now, namely the final missing reel of Web of Fear, which went walkabout from the tv station in Jos. Even if one accepts that WOF3 was originally there & snaffled by the Jos station manager, we don't know that it is 'at large' anywhere (England or elsewhere) despite Phil's extreme optimism. Alas there is a good chance that the Jos guy destroyed it in order to hide the evidence of his crime. I've not heard this one either. Interesting though as Richard M rates Power as one of the least likely stories for which any MEs are still out there.

Let's just say that whilst the central kernel of this story is correct, there are also an awful lot of embellishments that have been added to it and assumptions made. Maybe one of them being that it was a BBC intern who took the call, as I don't recall hearing that before?

I think it was Phil Morris who first brought this to light. Apparently the Nigeria TV station (or whoever it was) phoned the BBC (1999 seems to ring a bell) to offer them the first two seasons of DW. However, their offer was declined by whoever answered the phone, telling them that they all existed & had been released on DVD.
I did also hear elsewhere (maybe by Richard M - I'm not sure) that this has subsequently been confirmed as true as there is a record of this call having been made.
It has also been mooted that it is difficult to get past the BBC reception when one phones with the offer of a potentially missing episode, as unless a call relates to a TV series currently under production, then they're not sure to whom they should direct such a call. This would explain why the Nigeria offer was turned down, and I don't think it was necessarily by an intern.
Indeed one wonders how many missing episodes, DW or otherwise, have been declined by the BBC for that very reason.

I’m very sorry guys/gals. My contribution was only this part; “Wasn’t sure if or where to post this, but as the guidelines refer to not posting about TIEA and PM (if I have got this wrong Paul V apologies), I thought this may be of interest. It was a post on Digital Spy today.”The rest was a post on DS and relates to a, Craig Cabell posting on FB. He may or may not be a troll (I have no idea), but I was just passing on information I thought people would want to discuss. I can only apologise again for any confusion I may have caused. You've nothing to apologise for. As it was a rambling and seemingly implausible assertion, I only skimmed over it although I should really have read it properly if I was gonna reply. So please accept my apologies.

Cleary a troll, given that Japan didn't air any Doctor Who until Pertwee in the late 1970s. Other than the Daleks movie (or movies?) Either a troll or he's been smoking some highly dubious cigarettes ...

I promised an update when I had it and this is it ... Where have your posted about this before, for which you promised us an update? I've just had a look through your previous posts and there is no mention of it, or indeed of promising an update on anything. Rather they are mostly comments on animations ...

My Christmas wish this year is that the fate of WOF3 finally be confirmed for definite. But for now the speculation continues, and to the tune of “O Little Town of Bethlehem” … O Episode 3 of Web of Fear, I wonder where thou lies. That Jos guy took because he’s a crook but did he accept a bribe? Yet in these dark times shineth, Phil’s everlasting zeal. Our hopes and fears of the past few years will finally be revealed. Collector, fan or Fitzroy bod, whoever has whisked it away. We want to see Web of Fear part 3, The Brigadier’s first foray. Please return it to the BBC, or perhaps it has ceased to be. Tossed into a stream within the deepest ravine … or is it with Ian Levine?!?

What is the liklihood,if any of something being 'gifted' for Dr Who's 60th anniversary...?Marco Polo perhaps? During the run-up to the 50th anniversary, there was a great deal of expectation & anticipation that the BBC would use the event to announce a haul of returned episodes. No doubt it will be the same for the 60th too ...

I haven't heard or seen Phil's statement about having an idea who has it, actually. Do you have a link? If he has fully explained what happened then this is all moot conjecture anyway. www.youtube.com/watch?v=xG1uryUKNhY at 18:45

So, working the logic backwards, since he hasn't told us the whole story, I'm guessing he does know where it is. Phil's only said he has "an idea" who has it. So if your conclusion is that he does know where WOF3 is, does it follow that you also believe that one of the Fitzroy lot have it? I mean it would seem strange that he would make such an accusation knowing damn well that it is not true.

That's understandable. I wonder why Phil won't just come out and say so now? If it is in the station manager's hands, and he has either destroyed it or we have no hope of ever seeing it, why not just tell us what really happened? I think Phil is genuinely convinced that it is in private hands and that he can one day retrieve it. Could be the old "wishing it back into existence" syndrome though! I also believe that on balance, it is likely in the hands of a collector, but not necessarily as a result (directly or indirectly) of someone within whom he had confided.
