Just spotted this. The Verity Lambert piece comes from and early 1984 edition of `Did You See?' which profiled her careerup until that point and featured clips from `An Unearthly Child', Arabic speaking Daleks and `Rock Follies' amongst others. I still have an off-air VHS recording of this.

What is not clear at this stage is whether the Basil Brush show has been returned to the BBC or is still with Television International Enterprises. Would the Beeb be prepared to pay for this programme? Although I am a fan of the Kinks I can't see that Basil Brush is commercially viable in the same way as the Troughton returns and I can forsee a situation where - hypothetically - lots of obscure shows turn up for which the BBC are not prepared to push the boat out to return to the archives.

Can anyone clarify whether any missing material was announced at the MBW event in Edinburgh yesterday? I have heard that a missing episode of At Last The 1948 Show was shown, and not one of the Swedish compilations either. The one on the schedule was 2.2 which is almost entirely on the DVD set except for one sketch. Perhaps it wasn't the best possible choice. Well it was good enough for me to order the 1948 Show DVD the following day - but only after confirming it contained the hilarious ballet sketch. Bit disapointed in the turnount though as the theatre has a capacity of 280 and by my estimation was slightly less than half full. Unless there was a large influx of Connery afficionados who turned up for the second half I dread to think how many would have been there for Colombe. On that basis I'd be surprised if MBW returns to Edinburgh anytime soon which is a shame as the event was well put together with some well chosen material. Unless of course Dick Fiddy does manage to tie an event in with the International TV Festival. But well done and thankyou to all concerned for bringing MBW north of the border.

Its going to busy at that end of Edinburgh as Hearts host Celtic in the Cup just down the road the same day - and the kick-off time clashes with MBW

I always have a problem when we have presenters on fairly recent historical documentaries who would not have been old enough to experience the subject for themselves. Not so long ago I viewed a documentary on allied POWs which featured some fascinating interviews with veterans and then switched to - as the caption informed us - an "expert" for his opinions. Yet the expert was only around thirty years of age and just did not seem right sharing the spotlight with those who had been there. This is the problem I have with Sandbrook. During his series on the `Seventies he advised us he had been three years of age during the Silver Jubilee. Granted the guy is a historian of some repute and clearly knows his stuff and indeed scripted the show. . I just don't think Sandbrook should be the presenter on these types of prpogramme when others from the time are available. For example Michael Aspel would have been more at home reviewing the Seventies and a politician from the time the Cold War.

Adam Lee once said - and I paraphrase - "the trouble with Doctor Who fans is that they won't accept they're gone. They think that they can will missing episodes into existence."

Well the BFI list is interesting. If the entries are accurate they appear to have the last two episodes of Season 5 - `Pipeline' and `The Answer'. I was under the impression nothing from that season had survived. Then again I didn't know about the inserts for the third and fourth seasons either...........

Well thats great news about the inserts for seasons 3 and 4 - I was not aware of this. Although I'd love to see it I can't say I'm holding my breath for another Freewheelers DVD anytime soon. Its now four years since the release of Season 6. Season 7 was supposed to be forthcoming - listed on play.com at one point as a future release, but later removed. Now I may be wrong but I am assuming there were no further DVDs due to poor sales for Season 6? Perhaps someone on here can confirm this or otherwise advise why Season 7 never saw the light of day. Regarding location filming there was an excelent article in Timescreen by (I think) Andrew Pixley many moons ago and IIRC there was a substantial ammount of recording at the Southampton Polytechnic. I will have the issue somewhere.

ITV Sport began archiving their output in 1969. I have seen a list of their pre '69 holdings and believe me it is VERY sparse. For the record there is no horse racing listed before 1967. Thanks. I wasn't really expecting anything else, though as I said at least two pre-1967 races definitely exist, as I've seen the 1962 & 1965 St Legers with Tony Cooke's commentary. I remember Channel 4 Racing, when they regularly showed races requested by their viewers, saying that their archive went back to 1968, and I remember someone saying on this or some other forum that the ITV contract change (with LWT replacing ABC as the central organising company for World of Sport and much other coverage) was the catalyst. But yes, there can be no doubt that the vast majority of ITV racing coverage from the b&w era doesn't exist, probably even including some of Arkle's races. Interestingly the YouTube upload (which has been stretched to widescreen) of the 1967 Whitbread Gold Cup looks to be a telerecording, probably a very rare thing to have made at the time and almost certainly only made because it looked as if it could be Mill House's last big win (as it proved to be), but the 1968 & 69 versions look like VT. Of course it is always possible some of these races reside with one or more of the ITV regions or even (though unlikely) in the main ITV archive.

Any number of things could have happened to `Web of Fear' part 3. The episodes were after all in six different cans not one large cannister. Even allowing for the fact the cans had been taped together at one point (presumably when placed on the shelf) things can get separated over a long period of time you know.

Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAfter much searching I finally found these 1984 issues of Doctor Who Bulletin. As can be seen this story goes way back and ultimately led to the return of the six missing parts of `The Time Meddler' and `The War Machines'. It did puzzle me at the time that the returns were not from Troughton as the article suggested. It would be interesting to know if the two newly recovered stories had infact been broadcast in Nigeria around 1984 - perhaps the answer will be in the forthcoming Doctor Who Magazine article!

Of course if there are any episode collectors holding on to odd episodes, and it's entirely hypothetical that there are, then a big find like this should make them nervous, particularly given that there is a *company* out there looking to repatriate missing episodes (among other activities, I know), that they've just had a remarkable success, and that they're still at it. Richard I was keeping an eye on a well known auction site this week just incase any of the rumoured found episodes suddenly became available prior to the announcement with collectors trying to cash in before their property dramatically lost its value!

Fortunately they didn't just mention Doctor Who episodes as being missing although it did look to be going down that road until the studio discussion. A very good piece which highlighted missing Dads Army, TOTP and Apollo 11 footage amonst others.
