[Mods, forgive me in advance if this far too off-topic] Someone pointed me in the direction of this article and scans of some prints: lightbox.time.com/2014/02/04/costica-acsinte-archive/#1Makes me think of the discussions on vinegar syndrome. Some of the images are stunning. Paul

For me, Comic Sans is beyond the pale because it doesn't look anything like hand drawn comic book lettering. It's a product of a stupid machine programmed by an ignorant clod. That's why it's EVIL, rather than merely ugly!

Some of the images are stunning. Paul A lovely diversion (rather than "too far" from the topic) and salient in that it shows us how simultaneously durable and fragile images are. There's an episode of the 1970s "Kung Fu" series where Kwai Chang Caine finds a photographer who took a group photo that included Caine's half-brother, Danny. The photographer is the only one who can tell him which of the men in the photo is Danny. It's a little breath-taking to realize the analog world is ending. Perhaps that's why we so desperately want the missing episodes back, because we realize these are the dying days of things going missing, this is the last time we'll have the chance to grasp for these fragile little butterflies and know the delight of saving them from the darkness ... (And now I'm going to bed before I become hopelessly maudlin.)

Here's a question: From what little I know of such things, a lot of the stuff distributed to troops in war zones (Vietnam, South Korea, etc.) went through the countries' embassies. So with the UK being the source country and the US being one of the target countries, wouldn't it be likely that one of their embassies had some of these prints?

Obviously the above doesn't include the use of Comic Sans, which is a crime against the internet and will be punished with immediate deletion. There's far worse than comic sans, mate! So, are we free to use Marlett? Vincent Connare made both of those. And Trebuchet MS. I hesitate to use the word "designed", you will notice...

We may have to go back to the original title of the thread... Anyone care to summarise developments over the last 24-hours?I can tell it's not looking good, but boy is it vomplicated!*
More on Planet Mondas...
(I meant 'complicated',but come to think of it,'vomplicated' is better!).

The situation is complicated and, honestly, tiring. The gist is that the owner of the reels found in Taiwan has not contacted anyone to discuss the possibility of handing them over for study.
It brought on some doubt that the story was genuine. Mr. Levine felt it necessary to confront the individual immediately. In a rather frustrated response the individual vents his misgivings about the whole affair. His life is busy and the moldy reels that will make no money for him are at the bottom of his list to deal with. He regrets word ever getting out that he had them, and confessed that he's thought about destroying them.
To be frank, the question posed to him was rather brash, hurried, and accusatory. The individual who owns the reels does not deserve the over-zealous attention he has received from this fandom. People have been contacting him non stop about the reels.
-------------
I feel that compassion should be the key here. The owner needs to know that we're sorry he's being harassed, that the reels are understood to be his property, and that as interested parties we would like to work with him to make this better for everyone involved..... all on his schedule, not ours.
But I'm just another "fan", and as much as I'd like to convey that sentiment to him I fear it would do no good at this time.
I'd like to ask Paul if anything could be done to smooth this situation over... as he's far more experienced dealing with this than anyone else ... However, I have a feeling that there's little to be done.
Que sera, sera.
The best thing to do is just let things be for now. And keep up the searching ...

The moral of the story is not to publicly announce a "find" be it a lost episode or a duplicate film print until after you have at a minimum seem photographs of the film prints and cans.
In a digital age it take only a few seconds to snap a picture and post it. . .

I wonder if there is a possibility this was a ruse to flush out episodes thought to be already held by you know who ! To make him think he might be pipped at the post if the same episodes turned up ! Ep 6 of Enemy did sound a bit fishy tho........

In terms of a strategy to flush out hoarded episodes it wasn't too bad - problem is, I'm not convinced there are a lot out there to flush

I'm fairly ashamed of the times I've climbed on the ridicule-Ian Levine-bandwaggon for the sake of a pun.Ian,in common with the rest of us,has his weak points and his vanities. In his case-given the prominence he's gained in the field of rescuing missing episodes-he too often seems to bring out the sadist in people.
