No, I know that wasn't your intention, hence my smiley! My point is that it's a little disingenuous to read a denial and then straight away wonder whether the denial is out of date. Of course you're right, situations can change, but equally they can stay the same for many years (possibly for ever), which is statistically far more likely in this case. This is why I wouldn't want to hold my breath waiting for something that might never come. The smiley does make sense. In complete agreement with this, I'm just a bit more optimistic than some. No doubt that will change over time!

I'm just a bit more optimistic than some. No doubt that will change over time! Sigh, it will. I was quite optimistic through the 1990s, and even until the new series started. With no returns after the new series started, I'd pretty much given up hope by 2010. Even the 2011 Galaxy 4/UM find didn't give me much hope, other than perhaps 1 or 2 similar episodes were still floating around forgotten by collectors. And there's not much you can do to hunt for those, except wait.

(Ross, I'm sure I wouldn't be crushingly disappointed. Remember the scene in Episode 2 where Clancey loses his battle with malfunctioning technology, and completely fails to get breakfast? Perhaps I'm weird, but that still makes me smile. Anyway, crap or not, we need an ep. that actually has the titular Pirates in it!)

To answer the question posed by this thread I don't think interest in missing episodes will ever wane judging by the continuing speculation particularly in this anniversary year. Unfortunately being what we are human beings will believe in anything - look at conspiracy theories, etc.

You appear to be saying that there is a claim that a hoard of episodes is abroad and there may be "legal issues". Whilst I am not agreeing nor disagreeing with this current story, could you or someone more educated in these matters explain why there would be any legal issues with BBC prints being returned?

This has been postulated before on another forum (amongst much other wild speculation, it has to be said). IIRC, the consensus then was that it was almost certainly uninformed rubbish, but that in any case, it would probably be sensible not to tempt fate by talking about it in public.
I'm inclined to agree.

I haven't seen any of the Doctor Who range since 2010, when I moved house. Do you or any have a brief summary of the salient points made about this issue?

Will interest in missing episodes wane? .... lord, I hope so. This 50th anniversary year has been horrendous with the rumor mill. Reading the whole Outpost Skaro claim (hoax?) and it's raising my anxiousness levels.
How could interest ever truly wane? The fandom for this show is gigantic, and they've been making stories, comics, and audios for the classic doctors prior to the show's reboot. Even if the show went off the air today we'd have decades of fans that would spur this on.

If the show went off the air today, even DWM would be able to keep going for the next 100 years before they have to start publishing articles about how the Daleks is actually the Mutants is actually Beyond the Sun is actually Edge of Destruction to fill up the pages....!

Stranger things have happened but I'm inclined to think it's a hoax.

That rumour sounds too good to be true. Potentially 40 something episodes found? Mostly Troughtons? Stranger things have happened but I'm inclined to think it's a hoax. The problem is that it's the second "Fan Website" dedicated to the show that doesn't (or they shouldn't) want to sully their reputation with hoaxes. Outpost Skaro believes in its sources, and DWOnline went through this previously as well. I'm also inclined to believe it's too good to be true. But the rumor this time is quite interesting and very detailed. This isn't your average Joe claiming to have an episode and refusing to turn it in, or a twitter account offering access to his stash if you pay money. These are sites trying to build a name for themselves, seemingly not wanting to sully their reputation, with what they are calling confident sources. The rumor deals with a large number of episodes through a bicycling "hub". Even if it turns out that all this is absolute hogwash ... for rumors/hoaxes this is a nicely detailed one that is getting people much more involved with learning about broadcasting history, copyright laws, and distribution companies. And knowledge is power. Or at least that's what the Saturday morning PSA's told me when I was a child.

I'm not on Outpost Skaro. Could someone fill me in? The summary is this: Outpost Skaro have said that a cache of episodes has been found in a "bicycling hub". This 'hub' I assume relates to the bicycling of episodes across the world, especially across continents, for example Africa, and it is believed that it is a country in Africa that holds them. The cache contains BBC programming from the late 60s and 70s, including missing Who. Outpost Skaro have also in the last 3 hours posted that they waited "until it was confirmed by a source [they] trust completely before making an announcement". This rumour has been mentioned by other sources, but there appears to be contradiction of key points. Outpost Skaro have said that they are "99% certain" that missing Who is in this collection. Some others with friends/connections have said that there is a stash of episodes but no Who is in it. There is also apparently a copyright issue and this is why they have not been returned to the BBC. To be clear:This has not been confirmed by anyone formally and it could again be a rumour with no truth in it. However, Outpost Skaro does interview key production staff from current Who so I'm not sure they would be doing themselves any favours by leaking this information if there was no truth in it at all. Hope that answers it all Best wishes Dan
