I think what this thread proves is that interest in Missing Episodes won't wane as long as people are interested in learning about them. Unfortunately, that interest has also brought out the online vultures who seem to think that any rumour, however implausible, is worthy of reporting as fact.
I can't think of anything more reckless than reporting as imminent a rumour of the recovery of lost material which is not yet secure. If the film did by some miracle exist and I was the person hanging onto it, I'd most likely turn my back on the whole thing and just walk away. As has been pointed out by others, this selfishness does harm and no good, and I speak with years of personal experience of dealing with film collectors and archives.
There's probably nothing to this, but regardless, the rumourmongers are plainly idiots.

Looking at it from that perspective I can see your point Paul. I would have thought that no one reasonable would want to jeopardise any potential recovery.

Outpost Skaro are actually to blame for this though. They are the ones who tweeted that some sort of missing episode announcment was due. Since this has happened they have done nothing but wind fans up with subtle little hints. Most likely to generate traffic for their site.

Paul Those are stronger words than perhaps we're accustomed to hearing from you Paul, but I understand your reasoning given certain online reporting. As an interested fan, I don't mind passing on the latest news to fellow posters, as I like to speculate and share my thoughts as well as hear other opinions, but it is completely irresponsible for such unsubstantiated rumours to emanate from established online sources and as you say, pass it on as news. I will readily admit to accepting some of these stories too easily in the past, but the plain truth is that they shouldn't be reporting them. It's all well and good informing us folk of actual news, but when it's not confirmed, it normally leads to people feeling stupid, and the original source claiming that everyone else is blame, forgetting that they announced it in the first place. This leads to ill-feeling and affects reputations as well as the effects you mentioned originally Paul.

If the Naughty 90 are actually recovered, I think interest in the missing episodes will increase. Partly because of the press. Partly because there will only be the few remaining items; it will no longer be so daunting. Also, I think that were it to turn out that only five stories are missing (and only partially for four of them), the BBC might actually consider reshooting the episodes professionally, maybe for the 60th anniversary. Or having them professionally animated.
