It was part of the seven films returned by Roger Stevens/Ian Levine which also contained The Abominable Snowmen 2 and Invasion of the Dinosaurs 1. The other four were also redundant. But the Moonbase print was much better quality than the print the BBC previously held and was used for the DVD transfer. I had been wondering which print was used for Cybermen - The Early Years. Episode 4 on that videotape was so freaking bright, it was extremely difficult to see the Cybermen walking on the surface of the moon in one scene. In the opening credits, it was hard to see "The Moonbase", "Episode 4", and "By Kit Pedler." From a technical point of view, was there something wrong with the film? Was it just a bad copy? Why was there such a difference in the brightness of the two prints?

I think they used the older (inferior) print on the videotape, but I'm not certain. There are several possibilities for why it was inferior -- some that come to mind - a) could be a dupe (maybe a viewing print duped from another print), b) could be a misprint, c) could be from a different T/R attempt ... Who knows for sure ...

*raises his hand* I give my solemn promise that should I ever visit a flea market that I would bring with me a camera and enough money to ensure I could purchase any material that may be missing. I also promise not to say anything to anyone save the Restoration Team no matter how tempting it would be to gloat.
How's that? :3 Of course, first I'd have to find a flea market around here >.>

Though the chances of them showing up in North America are very slim, we too have film collectors. Someone from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, etc. could've moved here with their collection. Someone could've flown to London in the 70s or 80s and bought a reel to bring back home. Slim, but worth the occasional inquiry. Someone could've taken pictures of the television when Marco Polo played in Canada. My friend's father (God that sounds like I'm starting a rumor) remembers watching Marco Polo when he was a child. We're on the border here so we often get their stations. I asked him if he by chance knew of anyone recording those episodes back then. He told me no, of course not. I think he gave me one of those looks ... half way between pitying me and also thinking I'm insane. I've also looked in my newspaper TV Listings, but the earliest I could find Doctor Who mentioned on any of the channels is in the 80s. To be fair though, my local newspapers were horrible at TV listings back in the early 60s and 70s.

I also promise not to say anything to anyone save the Restoration Team no matter how tempting it would be to gloat. I'm sure this has been covered before, but - why should Dr. Who recoveries be kept secret ? What's wrong with saying "I found an episode, and I've given it to the Restoration Team" ? (Note : I have not actually found an episode !)

Neil: It could be damaged beyond restoration. Faceless Ones 3 was a bit shaky in that regard ...
It's wise not to blab about it until the Restoration Team confirms that it's been transferred, digitized and saved. It might be wise to not say anything and allow them to announce it at a large film event to try and convince other collectors to come forward.

its amazing how many people who should know better are finding prints at sales and leaving them. Paul thanks for looking. Dont know if there was any others or this guy made a mistake. Did you ask him what else he had? Sorry, no more, at least that he was owning up to!!

The disappointing thing is that this has even been given the slightest bit of credence and runs to 4 pages on here. This iamthedoctor 'poster' is known for a history of daft threads both on GB and the Ian Levine forum. If any fool can make up such an obvious pathetic hoax and get this much airspace then we've got a lot more twaddle to wade through in the future.

You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a prince.. .guess we also have a lot of time on our hands with nothing better to talk about lol.
Paul followed up with it, but its ironic many who believe they have seen something dont take a picture of it let alone offer to buy it as proof.

It's always suspicious when the first thing someone does after finding a possible lead is to make a post about it at a forum ... Yes I can't understand that either, especially as it's likely to cause a frenzy of other people trying to contact the seller and possibly jeopardize things. I wouldn't say a word until I had the film/tape/whatever in my hand and confirmed what was on it.

Dr Who films could exist in the States, don't forget that the TOTP featuring the Beatles in the studio (15/04/65?) and Xmas 1970 are both believed to exist there in private collections.

If any fool can make up such an obvious pathetic hoax and get this much airspace then we've got a lot more twaddle to wade through in the future. If you think it is an annoyance now, I have a feeling that the hoaxes and rumors are only starting since we are only fifteen months away from the 50th Anniversary. The hoaxers would love to find a way to ruin the celebration for a portion of the fans by making them think more episodes have been found for DVD releases next year and then nothing turns up.

Well, I think most of the posters here have a healthy ammount of cynicism regarding posts about missing Doctor Who. Frankly I have heard it all before! Whilst I would always exercise my prerogative to be polite, I don't really put any credence in any cooked up mumbo jumbo about 'my nan has a 19mm print of the fury of the darleks episode 7' or 'my dad used to work at the BBC and he saved every single missing episode but they were stolen by a trained hawk and lord knows where they are now'........ I surmise we can expect a deluge of unconvincing hoaxes over the coming months, there will probably be a few bitterly dissapointed teenagers but they will toughen up and get wise.........
